OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 7, 2020) – There wasn't much not to like for fans of Oklahoma Christian softball as the Eagles made their much-anticipated 2020 home debut on Friday at Tom Heath Field.
OC continued its hot start to the season with a pair of dominant wins, rolling past Colorado School of Mines 8-0 and Southwestern Oklahoma State 9-1 on the first day of the Edmond Regional Festival. Both games ended in only five innings because of the run rule.
Lindsey Stoeckel and
Kali Crandall turned in a pair of complete-game pitching performances,
Brianna Robinson hit a grand slam for her first home run in an OC uniform and the Eagles banged out 16 hits despite batting for only eight innings in the two games. OC (6-1) has outscored its opponents 74-24 so far this season.
Brie Dunckel and
Hannah Pate, OC's No. 1- and No. 2-hole hitters, each had three hits in the two games and did an outstanding job "setting the table and getting on base and putting pressure on the defense," OC coach
Shanon Hays said. "We had some big swings from (Robinson) and Lindsey cleared the bases with a good approach. We hit some balls really hard. We played pretty solid defense and got lots of girls some at-bats."
In the opener, Stoeckel (3-0) allowed only five hits against Colorado Mines (1-3), allowing only one baserunner to advance as far as third base.
Meanwhile, OC broke a scoreless tie with the Orediggers with a five-run third inning. Reigning NCAA Division II national player of the week
Jaiden Johnson keyed the outburst with a two-run triple to right-center field and Robinson added a run-scoring single.
OC added three more runs in the fourth against Colorado Mines starter Sydney Marchando (1-1), with Robinson delivering a two-run double to make it 8-0. Stoeckel then blanked the Orediggers in the top of the fifth, ending the game.
It was more of the same in the second game against Southwestern (0-2). Robinson's grand slam was a no-doubter – a line drive over the left-field fence – that helped OC jump to a 5-0 lead in the first inning against Southwestern pitcher Brianna Cryer (0-1).
Alisa Friesen relieved Cryer with one out in the first inning, but the Eagles didn't treat her much better, scoring four more runs in the second. Stoeckel hit a bases-loaded double to left-center field to make it 9-0 and cruised from there.
Crandall (2-0) allowed only four hits and struck out six, allowing the Bulldogs only an unearned run with two outs in the top of the fifth.
"It was good to stretch Kali out a little bit," Hays said. "Her last outing, she threw three shutout innings. She was around the plate the whole time and her spin was good and her riseball was good. That was big for us today."
The Eagles will host Pittsburg State (Kan.) at 2 p.m. Saturday before finishing the first weekend of the three-weekend festival with games Sunday against Southwest Baptist (Mo.) at noon and Missouri Southern at 2 p.m.
