Angelo State sharpshooter’s career game dooms Lady Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 13, 2020) – In her last basketball game, Lana Marov of Angelo State (Texas) missed all eight of her 3-point attempts. She more than made up for that on Thursday, which proved fatal to Oklahoma Christian's hopes of knocking off the Rambelles.

Marov hit 8 of 9 shots from behind the arc, including two in the final two minutes that kept OC at bay and allowed Angelo State – ranked 10th in the South Central Region – to escape the Eagles' Nest with a 90-84 win. Marov finished with 26 points and eight rebounds to lead Angelo State (14-8, 11-7 Lone Star Conference).

OC (7-14, 7-10) lost despite outstanding performances by Megan Shelton and Katie Mayo. Shelton, a senior guard from Ardmore, posted her second career scoring high in her last three games, pouring in 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting. Mayo, a junior forward from Newcastle, recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds, the latter just one off her career high, and became the 31st player in OC history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career.

Even with the loss, OC remained in 11th place in the LSC standings, one game ahead of Midwestern State (Texas) and 1½ games ahead of Texas-Permian Basin. The top 12 teams in the LSC standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the league's postseason tournament.

Angelo State had a big size advantage on OC, particularly with 6-foot-4 center De'Anira Moore inside, but the Rambelles posted only a 44-39 rebounding advantage. OC limited its turnovers – committing a season-low six – which allowed the Lady Eagles to stay close and, at times, take the lead.

OC trailed 40-34 at halftime, but Maddison Collyer capped a 9-0 run by the Lady Eagles with a layup that gave them their biggest lead at 47-42 with 6:04 left in the third quarter. Marov and Sawyer Lloyd answered with 3-pointers for Angelo State to put the Rambelles back ahead.

After Kendra Levings tied the game at 50-50 with 3:38 left in the quarter, Marov and Catara Samuel each hit a 3-pointer during a 9-0 run by Angelo State. Again, OC had an answer and took a 70-69 lead with 5:30 left in the game on a basket by Mayo. She scored again to tie the game at 72-72 with 4:51 left, but eventually Angelo State's barrage of 3-pointers – the Rambelles hit 13 in 29 attempts – proved too much as it built a six-point lead in the final minutes.

A 3-pointer by Shelton with 33.8 seconds left pulled OC within 86-84, but the Lady Eagles missed three subsequent 3-point attempts and Angelo State went 4 of 6 from the free-throw line in the final 28.6 seconds left.

Moore, who missed Angelo State's two games last week due to illness, finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Samuel had 16 points. Backup center Kendall Blackburn scored 15 for OC while Caroline Lawley added 10 points.

OC will host last season's NCAA Division II champion, Lubbock Christian (Texas), on Saturday at 2 p.m.
