LAS VEGAS (Feb. 1, 2020) – With a pair of dominant offensive performances, Oklahoma Christian recorded two more wins Saturday in the Desert Stinger over teams that qualified for last year's NCAA Division II softball tournament.
With eight RBIs,
Jaiden Johnson just missed tying a single-game school record and the Eagles seized control with a nine-run first inning en route to a 17-4 romp over San Francisco State (Calif.) at Majestic Park. Then, in a game that didn't end until after 11 p.m. local time, the Eagles rolled to a 14-9 win over Western Oregon, a team that – like OC – advanced to a regional championship round in last year's D-2 tournament.
Lindsey Stoeckel picked up the pitching win in both games and went 4 for 7 with six RBIs for OC (3-1), which will wrap up its five-game stint in the Desert Stinger on Sunday against Regis (Colo.).
Stoeckel pitched a complete game against San Francisco State (2-2), allowing only three hits and one earned run in five innings.
She was the beneficiary of OC's monster first inning against San Francisco State starter Emily Mitchell (0-1), during which the Eagles sent 14 batters to the plate, with the first nine reaching base, either by basehit or walk. Stoeckel and Johnson each hit a two-run single during the outburst and Johnson also had another run-scoring single in the inning.
OC's nine runs were its most in an inning since the Eagles scored nine in the fourth inning of a 14-9 win over Rogers State on April 2, 2015.
Johnson hit a grand slam during a five-run third inning that put the Eagles ahead 14-1. The Gators took advantage of two OC errors and a passed ball to score three runs in the bottom of the third, but OC tacked on three more runs in the fifth, two on a home run by freshman pinch-hitter
Jillian Bouse that followed a solo home run by Johnson. Only one OC player ever has had more RBIs in a game than Johnson -- Angie Plowman, who had nine in a win over Southern Nazarene on March 24, 2007.
The 17 runs against San Francisco State were the most for the Eagles since they beat Emporia State (Kan.) 18-3 on Feb. 6, 2016, in Durant, Okla.
Western Oregon (2-2) -- which, like OC, received votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Federation's Division II preseason poll -- actually outhit OC 13-11, but the Eagles' hits were more timely.
Kaitlyn Dennis had two hits and four RBIs, Stoeckel had two hits and three RBIs,
Hannah Pate had three hits and two RBIs and Johnson also had two RBIs, both on a fifth-inning home run, her third of the day. Meanwhile, the Wolves stranded 11 baserunners.
The Wolves did score two runs in each of the first three innings and one more in the fourth (briefly tying the game), but OC had three in the first, four in the second and four more in the bottom of the fourth to seize control. A three-run fifth inning essentially put the game away for the Eagles.
Stoeckel (2-0) entered in the fourth inning and pitched the rest of the game for the Eagles, not allowing any runs until there were two outs in the seventh inning.
Western Oregon reliever Reilly Tidwell (0-2) allowed seven runs (but only four hits) in four innings. Tyler Creach led the Wolves offensively, going 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.
OC's win evened its all-time series against Western Oregon, which beat the Eagles 5-4 on Feb. 23, 2014, in San Antonio.
