LAREDO, Texas (Dec. 11, 2020) – Texas A&M International committed 32 turnovers, but Oklahoma Christian couldn't take advantage while falling 57-51 on Friday at TAMIU's Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
In the season opener for both basketball teams, OC (0-1, 0-1 Lone Star Conference) shot just 29.8 percent from the field (17 of 57) and never led TAMIU (1-0, 1-0) after the opening minutes.
All nine healthy players saw action for the Lady Eagles and eight of them scored, led by senior guard
Tyra Peck, who had 12 points to go with five steals, the latter matching her career high. Senior forward
Katie Mayo just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds and junior center
Kendall Blackburn scored eight points and blocked three shots.
OC took its last lead at 9-8 on a 3-pointer by Blackburn midway through the first quarter, but the Dustdevils went on an 11-2 run to go up 19-11 at the end of the quarter. OC trailed 29-23 at halftime and was down 41-29 with 5:47 left in the third quarter after a 3-pointer by Patrycja Jaworska, who scored by 15 points for TAMIU.
TAMIU's lead peaked at 46-32 with 3:42 left in the third quarter on a basket by Brie Delon, who led the Dustdevils with 16 points. OC scored the final seven points of the quarter to cut its deficit to seven points and was within 48-44 after a basket by
Emma Epperly with 5:10 left in the game, but the Lady Eagles came no closer.
Mayo's 3-pointer with 15 seconds left pulled OC within 55-51 but Jaworska made two free throws with :07 left to seal the win for the Dustdevils.
The loss snapped OC's seven-game winning streak against TAMIU. The Dustdevils' previous win over OC came on Jan. 30, 2016, in Laredo.
OC and TAMIU will play again on Saturday at 3 p.m.
