TYLER, Texas (Jan. 16, 2020) – Oklahoma Christian's defense was up to its usual standards Thursday night at Texas-Tyler, but the Eagles struggled with their shooting for long stretches of the basketball game.
Not so for Texas-Tyler, which took the lead during one of OC's cold stretches in the first half and rode it the rest of the way for a 59-50 win at the Louise Herrington Patriot Center.
OC (5-9, 4-6 Lone Star Conference) limited an opponent to under 65 points for the 10th time this season, but the Eagles shot just 35.8 percent (19 of 53) from the field – including 7 of 26 (26.9 percent) from 3-point range – while Texas-Tyler hit 48 percent of its shots (24 of 50), led by a 21-point performance by Ty Glover. That ultimately proved to be the difference.
The Eagles led for a good portion of the first half and were up 19-14 at the 6:53 mark after a basket by
Dedrian Parmer Jr., who scored 14 points. But the Eagles managed only two points the rest of the half and Texas-Tyler (6-9, 3-7) eased ahead 24-21 by halftime.
The Patriots quickly extended their lead to 29-21 in the first minute of the second half and eventually led 43-30 after a basket by Darius Alford with 9:14 left. OC came within six points on three occasions after that, but no closer.
Aubrey Johnson led the Eagles with 18 points, while Micah Fuller added 14 points and six assists for Texas-Tyler, which is transitioning in 2019-20 from NCAA Division III into Division II and the LSC.
The Eagles will face another LSC divisional foe, Texas A&M-Commerce, on the road on Saturday afternoon.
