OKLAHOMA CITY (April 14, 2019) – Oklahoma Christian fell into an early hole and proved unable to climb out, dropping an 11-6 decision to St. Mary's (Texas) on Sunday afternoon in the series finale between the softball teams at Tom Heath Field.
The loss dropped OC (29-11, 13-8 Heartland Conference) into third place in the league standings behind St. Mary's (27-19, 16-9). Rogers State (30-16, 15-8) tops the conference standings and will face OC five times in the next two weeks.
St. Mary's took two of three games in the weekend series from the Eagles, after OC suffered a doubleheader sweep at St. Edward's (Texas) on Wednesday.
"We picked the wrong time of year to have a bad week," OC coach
Shanon Hays said. "At St. Ed's, we just didn't get runs in when we needed to, but our defense held up. This weekend against St. Mary's, our defense didn't hold up.
"St. Mary's outplayed us. St. Mary's played good defense; we didn't. The pitching was about the same both ways around. We didn't take advantage of the times we had a lot of runners on base and they did, so they deserved to win."
The Rattlers scored twice without a hit in the first inning, on two walks by OC starter
Madison Hagood (13-6), a hit batsman and an error.
Kayla Eichler doubled home
Hunter Strickland with two outs in the third to pull the Eagles within 2-1.
Run-scoring two-out singles by Raynelle Nash and Staci Johns keyed a three-run fourth for St. Mary's, but the Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, two scoring on the first of two doubles by
Daelyn Denny.
The Rattlers scored another three runs in the sixth, two on a two-out single up the middle by Abby Carney off OC reliever
Kali Crandall. OC responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, with Denny and
Bridget White both smacking doubles. White's pulled the Eagles within 8-6.
Hagood re-entered in the seventh but gave up three more runs and Johns (16-10) closed out the Eagles in the bottom of the inning to finish a complete-game performance.
OC will visit Lubbock Christian (Texas) for a doubleheader on Tuesday before hosting Rogers State for a doubleheader on Thursday.
