Eagles lose twice at St. Edward’s, fall out of 1st in Heartland

AUSTIN, Texas (April 10, 2019) – A pair of frustrating one-run losses on Wednesday has Oklahoma Christian looking up in the Heartland Conference softball standings for the first time since mid-March.

St. Edward's scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat OC 3-2 in the opening game at Diane Daniels Field and the Hilltoppers won an 11-inning marathon in the second game by a 7-6 count.

OC (28-9, 12-6 Heartland) – which had received votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll for the second time this season earlier in the day – now trails Rogers State (29-14, 14-6) and is just ahead of St. Mary's (Texas) in the league standings. St. Mary's (25-18, 14-8) will visit OC for a key three-game series on Friday and Saturday.

St. Edward's (13-21, 9-15) is in sixth place and the Hilltoppers are just trying to make the five-team field for the Heartland tournament. They took a big step toward doing so by taking the season series from the Eagles three games to two.

The Eagles left 11 runners on base in the opener against St. Edward's pitcher Julisa Ortega (5-8), but tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth when Daelyn Denny's infield single scored Bridget White, who had led off with a single up the middle and stole second base. Denny reached third base with one out, but was thrown out at home plate trying to score on a ground ball by Brie Dunckel.

Kayla Appleby hit a solo home run over the left-field fence with one out in the seventh off Kali Crandall (9-3) to give the Hilltoppers the win.

OC jumped on St. Edward's starter Reagan Carter for three runs in the first inning of the second game (two on a double by White), but St. Edward's answered back with four runs off OC starter Kaylie Upton in the bottom of the inning, then two more off Madison Hagood in the second to go ahead 6-3.

Crandall came in to blank the Hilltoppers for the next 8 2/3 innings and the Eagles rallied with three runs in the fifth, with White and Kayla Eichler delivering run-scoring singles. OC left two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings but managed only one baserunner in the four extra innings.

St. Edward's finally broke through again off OC's fourth pitcher, Lindsey Stoeckel (2-1), in the bottom of the 11th. Calli Burch drew a leadoff walk and with one out, Kathryn Connelly singled to right field, sending Burch to third. Morgan Lewis' sacrifice fly scored Burch with the game-winning run.
