Eagles’ hopes left stranded in loss to UCO

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 10, 2019) – One night after posting their highest run total in nearly five years, the Oklahoma Christian Eagles struggled to deliver clutch hits on Wednesday against Central Oklahoma.

The Eagles stranded a whopping 16 runners on base and paid the price, falling 8-4 to the Bronchos in a nonconference baseball game at Dobson Field. Despite the loss, OC (22-12) still took the season series from UCO (21-13) by a 2-1 count, having already won twice this season in games played at UCO.

The Eagles received an outstanding performance from starting pitcher Brent McDonald, who retired the first 10 UCO batters and allowed only two hits in six-plus innings of work. But he had only a 3-1 lead when he exited the game after walking two batters to start the seventh inning and both eventually scored.

OC, which won 21-17 at Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday, stranded at least one runner in all nine innings against UCO and left the bases loaded twice, in the third and fourth innings.

The Eagles finally broke through with a two-out rally in the fourth, loaded the bases when Brendon Bavester was hit by a pitch and Hunter Markwardt and Grant Lake both walked. Bavester scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

Doubles by Markwardt and Alex Garcia keyed a two-run sixth for the Eagles, giving them the 3-1 advantage, but the Bronchos came right back in the seventh to tie the game. OC eased back ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, as Kevin Collyar singled to left field to lead off and scored when Markwardt reached base on a two-out error on UCO. But that proved to be it for the Eagles' offense.

The Bronchos weren't done, though. A two-run homer by Taylor Avila off the left-field foul pole – the only longball on a day when a 22 mph wind was gusting out to left field – put UCO ahead 6-4 in the eighth and an error opened the door for two more runs for the Bronchos in the ninth, both scoring on a single by Philip Scott.

OC reliever Chase Berberich (4-2) took the pitching loss while Landon Bond (2-0), the fifth of seven UCO pitchers, picked up the win.

Markwardt went 2 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.

OC next will travel to Newman (Kan.) for a three-game Heartland series scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
