OKLAHOMA CITY (March 8, 2019) – After a disappointing loss to Texas Woman's earlier this season ended Oklahoma Christian's unbeaten softball start after six games, the Eagles came out ready for the rematch on Friday afternoon.
Bailey Strecker hit two home runs and
Brie Dunckel added an inside-the-park homer in a 6-0 win for OC, and Strecker, Dunckel and
Kaylie Upton each had timely extra-base hits as the Eagles finished off a doubleheader sweep with a 6-4 win at Tom Heath Field.
OC (16-5) had only played two games since a Feb. 23 sweep of Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas, losing a pair of extra-inning games to then-No. 15 Central Oklahoma on March 1. But the Eagles came out strong offensively against Texas Woman's (4-15) in the opener, leading 5-0 after three innings.
With OC leading 1-0, Dunckel hit a drive to left field off Texas Woman's starter Bailey Turner (2-9) that ended up being Dunckel's first home run with the Eagles, as she scooted around the bases following teammate
Daelyn Denny.
In the third,
Lindsey Stoeckel led off with a triple to right-center before Strecker homered to left-center field to make it 5-0. In her next at-bat, leading off the fifth inning, Strecker homered again to left-center.
Meanwhile, OC senior left-hander
Madison Hagood (6-2) twirled a complete-game five-hit shutout in the circle and allowed only one runner to reach third base.
After their 13-hit explosion in the first game, the Eagles' bats cooled a bit in the second game, as the managed only five hits. But they came at key times. In a three-run third off Texas Woman's starter Tatum Stover (0-2), Upton doubled to right-center to score Dunckel and
Bridget White, who each had walked, and Strecker followed with a double to right-center to score Upton.
Reliever Jordan Kisselburg hit Denny with a pitch to start the fourth inning and Denny eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. Stoeckel doubled down the left-field line in the fifth and came home on a sacrifice fly by Denny.
Just when it looked like OC would run away again, the Pioneers scored their first runs of the day on a three-run homer by Paige Tamayo in the sixth, pulling within 5-3. OC added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, though, as Dunckel tripled to left-center and Strecker brought her home with a sacrifice fly.
The Pioneers scored once in the seventh, but Upton – who relieved
Kali Crandall (6-2) in the sixth – finished out the game to record her second save of the season.
OC will receive another chance against a ranked foe on Tuesday, when the Eagles will host No. 15 Texas A&M-Kingsville for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
