Eagles make quick work of Newman, finish series sweep

MAIZE, Kan. (March 31, 2019) – It took Oklahoma Christian only 78 minutes to finish off its series sweep of Newman (Kan.) on Sunday afternoon.

Madison Hagood pitched a two-hit shutout, Kaylie Upton homered and the Eagles banged out seven doubles among their 14 hits while run-ruling Newman 10-0 in five innings at Maize High School, where the series was moved after rain made Newman's home softball field in Wichita unplayable.

In the three-game series, OC (26-6, 11-3 Heartland Conference) outscored Newman (8-23, 2-18) by a 25-1 count and limited the Jets to eight hits. The sweep kept the Eagles atop the league standings and they lead Rogers State (14-6), Lubbock Christian (Texas) (11-6) and St. Mary's (Texas) (11-6) by three games in the loss column.

OC will host Lubbock Christian for a key three-game series next Friday and Saturday.

The Eagles quickly jumped on Newman starter Chantel Purcella (3-7), as Upton's two-run homer – her fifth longball of the season – keyed a three-run first-inning outburst. Lindsey Stoeckel and Payton Sabolski each hit a run-scoring double and Bailey Strecker and Brie Dunckel added RBI singles as the Eagles scored five runs in the third inning.

Eichler and Strecker both had run-scoring doubles in a two-run fourth inning that put OC ahead 10-0.

Against Hagood (13-3), Newman had just one runner reach third base and the Jets didn't record a hit after the second inning. Hagood, a senior left-hander from Comanche, Texas, retired the last seven Newman batters consecutively to end the game.
