AUSTIN, Texas (March 23, 2019) – Needing a shutdown performance from its bullpen to secure a series win at St. Edward's (Texas),
Hayden Barber answered the call Saturday afternoon for Oklahoma Christian.
The sophomore right-hander picked up his second save in as many days, blanking the Hilltoppers on one hit over the final four innings and allowing OC to escape Lucian Hamilton Field with an 8-6 win in the decisive game of the baseball series between the Heartland Conference foes.
It was the first time OC (17-7, 2-1 Heartland) won a series at St. Edward's (12-16, 1-2) since joining the conference with the 2013 season and only the second series win ever for the Eagles over the Hilltoppers, with the other coming in Oklahoma City in 2016.
OC, ranked sixth in the South Central Region, won despite managing only six hits to 10 for the Hilltoppers. The Eagles took advantage of four St. Edward's errors to score five unearned runs that proved to be the difference.
OC scored twice in the first inning thanks in good part to a dropped fly ball by St. Edward's center fielder Chase Fontana, which allowed
Callen Crockett to reach base and eventually score on a single by
Errett Edwards.
The Hilltoppers tied the game in the bottom of the third and went up 3-2 in fourth on an RBI single by Morgan Allen. Both teams scored three runs each in a wild fifth inning.
Garrett Wages delivered a two-run, two-out single for OC that put the Eagles up 5-3 but Allen, who went 3 for 5, answered with a two-run single for the Hilltoppers that gave St. Edward's a 6-5 lead.
OC jumped on reliever Tyler Ingram (0-1) in the sixth. A walk, a hit batsman and an error loaded the bases for OC before Edwards drew a walk to tie the game. Koehler Vandament relieved Ingram to face
Alex Garcia, but second baseman Matthew Jiminez booted a ground ball by Garcia, allowing Crockett and
Blake Empkey to score to give OC an 8-6 lead.
Barber, who threw an inning of one-hit relief in a 9-7 win over the Hilltoppers on Friday for his first save of the season, entered the game in the sixth on Saturday and never left. After Robbie Lammons' sixth-inning single, St. Edward's didn't manage another hit.
Jake Tomcheck (2-0), who threw the fifth inning for the Eagles, earned the pitching win. Wages (2 for 5) and Markwardt (2 for 2 with three runs scored) combined for four of OC's six hits.
OC will visit local rival Central Oklahoma for a nonconference game Tuesday. The Eagles won 8-5 at UCO on Feb. 3.
