Rodery pitches another complete game as Eagles split with Newman

OKLAHOMA CITY (March 15, 2019) – The pitching was there both games, but the defense was there for only one, and that cost Oklahoma Christian on Friday against Newman (Kan.).

OC pitchers allowed only three earned runs in 16 innings, including a third straight complete-game performance by Gabe Rodery in a 4-2 win, but five errors in the second game proved costly as the Eagles – ranked sixth in the South Central Region – fell 6-4 at Dobson Field.

OC (13-5) and Newman (11-7) will play the decisive game of their baseball series on Saturday at noon. The series won't count in the Heartland Conference standings, as the teams will play again later this season in Wichita, Kan.

Rodery (4-0) saw his streak of consecutive scoreless innings end at 18, but the junior left-hander was plenty dominant against the Jets, striking out six and scattering seven hits. Meanwhile, freshman Kevin Collyar drove in two runs, one on his first collegiate home run, a towering shot over the left-field fence and into a 20-mph wind.

Errett Edwards singled home Hunter Markwardt in the first inning and Collyer's home run in the second off Newman starter Andrew Snyder (2-3) gave OC a 2-0 lead. Mitchell Austin's RBI single with two outs in the top of the third scored Tyler Push to pull Newman within 2-1 – and end Rodery's shutout streak – and the Jets tied the game in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Paul Rupnik.

Edwards led off the OC sixth with a single to left field and Alex Garcia followed with a double down the right-field line that scored Edwards. Collyar's two-out single brought home Garcia to make it 4-2.

In the second game, Newman scored three unearned runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead and the Eagles never quite recovered. A two-run single to right field by Markwardt pulled OC even at 4-4 in the sixth inning,  but a two-out error in the seventh allowed a run to score to put the Jets back ahead 5-4 before they added an insurance run – their only earned run of the game – in the eighth.

Newman reliever Ryan Boaz (3-0) allowed only three hits over 5 1/3 innings, while reliever Chase Berberich (1-1) was a tough-luck loser for the Eagles, as he gave up his first earned run in 12 2/3 innings of work this season.
