CLEBURNE, Texas (Feb. 8, 2019) – Oklahoma Christian baseball's unbeaten bubble finally burst on Friday morning, done in by a slew of errors and a talented opponent that took advantage of them.
OC committed nine errors and defending South Central Region champion Texas A&M-Kingsville pounced, scoring six unearned runs and holding off a brief ninth-inning rally to secure a 10-5 win over the Eagles in the Alpine Fresh 4Him Classic at The Depot at Cleburne Station.
OC (5-1) had been off to its best start since the program was reborn in 2008, already owning wins over a pair of teams that made last season's NCAA Division II tournament, Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Baptist. But TAMUK (2-3) seized a 4-0 lead in the second inning off OC starter
Robbie Suhr thanks in good part to two OC errors and the Javelinas never were caught.
The Eagles picked up a run in the third but left the bases loaded and another in the fourth while stranding two more baserunners, making it 4-2, but three OC errors in the bottom of the sixth led to three more runs for the Javelinas. Another error in the eighth opened the door for another three runs for TAMUK, making it 10-2.
OC, with two ninth-inning comebacks already this season, tried to stage a third, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth, one on a RBI single by
Garrett Wages and another on a fielder's-choice grounder by
Berry Hunt, but TAMUK Alex Canul escaped the jam to finish a four-inning stint and record his first save of the season.
TAMUK starter Preston Plovanich (1-1) gave up seven hits and struck out six in five innings. Suhr (0-1) took the loss despite allowing only one earned run and five hits in five innings.
Leadoff batter
Hunter Markwardt went 3 for 6 for OC, while
Alex Garcia, Wages and
Errett Edwards each had two hits to fuel the Eagles' attack. OC actually outhit the Javelinas 12-10.
The Eagles went 2-1 in pool play in the 4Him Classic and finished second in the pool. OC's opponent for Saturday's placement round will be Colorado Christian of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
