LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 24, 2019) – Oklahoma Christian showed itself to be resilient on Sunday, bouncing back from a heartbreaker of a loss in the afternoon to pick up a road win in the evening.
The Eagles took advantage of a critical Cameron error during a three-run seventh-inning outburst that lifted them past the Aggies 6-3 at McCord Field. That came just hours after OC dropped a 3-1 decision to William Jewell (Mo.) after giving up two runs in the top of the ninth inning.
OC (7-2) will host Cameron for its home opener at 4 p.m. Monday, after Cameron (5-7) faces William Jewell (5-3) at 1 p.m. as the baseball teams wrap up a three-game round-robin.
Coming off a 15-day layoff following a 6-1 start, perhaps it wasn't surprising the Eagles – ranked seventh in the South Central Region – had trouble offensively against William Jewell. The Eagles had eight hits but left 10 men on base, scoring only on a solo home run by
Alex Garcia in the fourth inning off the Cardinals' starter, Reed Pegram.
Fortunately for OC, the Cardinals left 18 runners on base. OC starter
Gabe Rodery continually pitched out of jams and gave up only one run in six innings, that in the fifth inning when Austin Kline's infield single scored Christian Chalabi.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the ninth against OC closer
Jared Price (0-1), but not without a fight. Twice, Price threw out a potential go-ahead run at home plate, but with two outs, Chase Redick hit a two-run double to put William Jewell up 3-1.
Reliever Garrison Fields (1-0) allowed a two-out double to
Hunter Markwardt in the bottom of the ninth but successfully closed out the game for the Cardinals.
OC had only seven hits against Cameron, but managed considerably more run production.
Errett Edwards had a run-scoring single during a two-run third inning that put OC up 2-1. Cameron scored twice in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2, but
Grant Lake's infield single scored
Abe Spencer in the fourth to tie the game.
In the seventh,
Drew Wright drew a leadoff walk from Cameron starter Devin Castro (1-1) and Markwardt reached on an infield single. Cameron third baseman Beau Williams misplayed
Callen Crockett's sacrifice bunt, allowing Wright and Markwardt to score and Crockett to advance to third base. Edwards then delivered another sacrifice bunt to score Crockett.
After 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief by
Chase Berberich (1-0), Price received another opportunity to close and delivered, retiring the Aggies in order in the ninth to record his third save.
