CANYON, Texas (Dec. 19, 2019) – No. 24-ranked West Texas A&M seized control with a dominant second quarter and downed Oklahoma Christian 76-37 on Thursday at First United Bank Center, dealing the Lady Eagles their first loss this basketball season to a Lone Star Conference opponent.
It mostly was a rough game for OC (3-5, 3-1 LSC), but there were some positives. The Lady Eagles outscored West Texas A&M (10-3, 3-1) 20-11 in the third quarter and experienced some success inside, with center
Kendall Blackburn scoring 11 points and forward
Katie Mayo adding 10.
OC hung with the Buffaloes early and trailed only 13-10 after Mayo scored with 4:04 left in the first quarter, but that proved to be the Lady Eagles' last points of the half. By halftime, West Texas A&M led 46-10.
"We just went ice-cold and they did not," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said. "Consistency has been our problem and that's what we've got to find."
Tyra Peck ended the drought with a 3-pointer 11 seconds into the second half and that seemed to inspire OC, which eventually closed the gap to 57-32 after a basket by Blackburn with 9:53 left in the game.
"We did execute better in the third quarter," Findley said. "We ran some specific things trying to get it to the high post."
West Texas A&M had four scorers in double figures – Braylyn Dollar (15 points), Megan Gamble (14), Abby Spurgin (13) and Sienna Lenz (10). OC held the Buffaloes' leading scorer, Delaney Nix, without a point.
"Tyra did a good job defensively on (Nix)," Findley said. "That was one of our objectives and we did that."
OC will wrap up first-semester action on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Central time with a visit to another LSC power, Eastern New Mexico.
"We've got to wipe this from our memory, quickly, in order to go play with confidence at Eastern New Mexico," Findley said.
