EDMOND, Okla. (Nov. 9, 2019) – Earlier this soccer season, Oklahoma Christian senior
Morgan Boling coined a phrase: "Today the only letter in the alphabet is a W."
On Senior Day for Boling and the Eagles, that proved to be exactly the case. Texas A&M-Commerce outshot OC 21-3, but OC's defensive back line and goalkeeper
Gabby Goddard somehow blanked the Lions and freshman
Jordan Freidenbloom headed in a free kick by
Caprice King in the 57th minute, giving the Eagles a 1-0 win in their season finale at Edmond Santa Fe High School's Wolves Stadium on Saturday.
TAMUC (10-7-1, 7-6 Lone Star Conference) is bound for the league tournament next week, but OC (3-15, 3-10) just wouldn't quit playing defense. Freidenbloom, an anchor on OC's back line, and her teammates continually thwarted scoring chances by the Lions and Goddard did her part, recording 11 saves – her fourth double-digit save effort of the season – to secure her second career shutout.
"There were a couple of girls that I challenged yesterday in little meetings to step up and represent the back line," OC coach
Meagan Anderson said. "Jordan has done a great job this year in organizing the back and she did so today. It was definitely the reason why we won."
TAMUC was "very direct, very forward in how they went and we did well with our game prep, doing what we needed to do on the defensive end.
Naomi Reagan is one that hasn't seen the field (much) but she got the nod today and did an excellent job. I'm very proud of her progress."
The game was moved to Santa Fe after heavy rains earlier in the week rendered OC's Eagle Soccer Field unplayable and the Eagles seemed to adapt well to the artificial turf at Wolves Stadium, having played on the surface a couple of weeks ago when one of their games was moved to Central Oklahoma's Wantland Stadium.
OC had an outstanding scoring chance in the 22nd minute, when senior defender
Oby Okeke's shot bounced off the crossbar. That was the Eagles' second shot of the game and they didn't have another until the 57th minute.
The Eagles earned a free kick from about 21 yards out on the right side. King, a sophomore from Glenpool, looped the kick into the penalty box, where Freidenbloom, from Edmond, connected and sent the ball past TAMUC goalkeeper Jen Peters. It was Freidenbloom's second goal of the season, and both were game-winners – she scored in the final moments of OC's 2-1 win at Texas A&M International on Oct. 10.
"We didn't get a whole lot of opportunities at the goal," Anderson said. "We got a lot of opportunities on the attacking end of the field, but some of those weren't quality chances. But, hey, we put away the one and it only takes one. We put it away when we needed it and we spent the rest of the time defending."
With the lead, OC had to hold off wave after wave of attacks by the Lions, who seemed to be inches away from a tying goal on several occasions. Perhaps their best chance came in the 75th minute, when Goddard fisted an arcing, long shot by Kaci Montoya over the crossbar. Leslie Campuzano had several outstanding chances for the Lions, as five of her seven shots were on goal, but Goddard stopped them all.
Goddard, a freshman from Tuttle, closed the season with 124 saves, tops among LSC goalkeepers and in the top 20 in NCAA Division II.
"She's a winner," Anderson said. "She wants to do her best. … She definitely did her job today and kept us in (the game) in situations where we kind of crumbled in front of her. She stands tall and she knows what she needs to do."
Peters finished with one save for the Lions.
