SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 23, 2019) –
Cheyenne Parks posted a NCAA Division II qualifying time in the 200-yard backstroke,
Brenda Mendes and
Kayci McKinnon joined her as event winners and Oklahoma Christian held on for the team title on Saturday on the final day of the Tiger Invitational at the
Josh Davis Natatorium.
OC prevailed in the six-team event by just six points over meet host Trinity (Texas), scoring 659 points to 653 for the Tigers, with Henderson State (Ark.) not far back with 558 points. It was the second multiple-team meet title in the three-year history of the OC program, following the title the Eagles won last January in the four-team Austin College Invitational in Sherman, Texas.
Parks, a freshman from Guthrie, added the 200 backstroke event title to the 100 backstroke win she claimed on Friday, posting a school-record time of 2:01.38, which met the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II Championships in March. She had set the previous OC mark of 2:05.80 in the Eagles' last meet, the Drury Invitational in Springfield, Mo., earlier this month.
Sophomore
Savanna Barth of Stillwater, Okla., also made the A final in the 200 backstroke and finished seventh in 2:12.49.
McKinnon, a freshman from Trophy Club, Texas, won the 1,650 freestyle on Saturday morning, setting a school record with a time of 17:32.87, breaking
Maggie Farley's former mark of 18:22.63 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships last February in Lewisville, Texas.
Along the way in the race, McKinnon set another school record with a split of 10:39.28 at the 1,000-meter mark. That broke the oldest mark in the OC record book of 10:50.94, set by
Ashley Harmon in the first meet in school history, the Shawnee Invitational in September 2017.
Mendes, a freshman from Windermere, Fla., also picked up her second win of the meet, taking the 200 butterfly title with a school-record time of 2:07.49. That broke
Riley Powelson's former mark of 2:09.44, set during the 2019 RMAC Championships. Mendes won the 100 butterfly on Friday and was the 200 individual medley runner-up on Thursday in the Trinity meet.
Also making the A final in the 200 butterfly was Farley, a sophomore from Humble, Texas, who placed eighth in 2:21.47.
In the 200 breaststroke, OC had two A finalists, with sophomore
Andrea Rogers of St. Charles, Mo., second with a school-record time of 2:27.16 and junior
Allison DeWeirdt of Keller, Texas, fifth in 2:29.57. Rogers snapped
Jamie McGarrigle's record of 2:29.71, set during the 2018 RMAC Championships.
McGarrigle, a junior from Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., was OC's lone A finalist in the 100 freestyle, placing fourth in 52.74 seconds.
In the meet's final event, the 400 freestyle relay, the Eagles placed third in 3:34.80, with legs from Mendes (53.91 seconds), Rogers (54.70 seconds), McKinnon (53.95 seconds) and McGarrigle (52.24 seconds).
The Eagles' next meet will be the Austin College Invitational on Jan. 11.
