Blackwell, Parmer, Lienhard clutch as Eagles win at Southwestern

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Nov. 18, 2019) – Seniors Marcus Blackwell, Dedrian Parmer Jr. and Will Lienhard made sure Oklahoma Christian didn't blow a second opportunity to seal a win at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Monday night.

Blackwell and Parmer each hit a pair of pressure-packed overtime free throws, Blackwell made OC's only basket in the extra period and Lienhard recorded the most blocked shots in a game by an OC player in nearly a decade, lifting the Eagles to a 64-61 win at the Pioneer Cellular Events Center. It was the first official career win for first-year OC head coach Kendre Talley.

OC (1-2) had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, gaining possession with 24 seconds left and the score tied 57-57, but the Bulldogs played good defense and despite two timeouts, the Eagles managed only a 3-point attempt by Lienhard, which missed with :01 left.

In overtime, Southwestern (2-2) went ahead 59-57 on a basket by Dominique Primer at the 4:01 mark. Johnatan Reyes-Valdez split a pair of free throws for the Eagles with 3:30 left, and then both teams locked down on defense. Lienhard picked up his seventh block – to go with eight points and 12 rebounds – in the OT, the first of what proved to be eight straight misses by the Bulldogs to close the game.

Parmer, who had 18 points and played all 45 minutes, ended the scoring drought with a pair of free throws with 1:16 left, putting OC up 60-59. Parmer drew a whopping 11 fouls during the game.

After Primer threw away a pass, Blackwell – who scored 20 points, just three off his career high – nailed a jumper in the paint to give the Eagles a three-point cushion.

OC's Aubrey Johnson fouled Kamden Gipson with 11 seconds left and Gipson made both free throws, pulling Southwestern within 62-61. The Bulldogs fouled Blackwell two seconds later and he answered with two free throws of his own. Jaylan Williams, who went 4 of 9 from 3-point range and scored 12 points, missed from behind the arc for the Bulldogs in the final seconds.

Damion Thornton led Southwestern with 13 points.

Lienhard's seven blocks were the most by an OC player since Will Reinke had seven in a win over Dallas Christian (Texas) on Dec. 28, 2010.

Southwestern led by 11 points twice in the first half, the second time at 30-19 after Gipson's basket at the 1:21 mark, and was up 30-20 at halftime. But OC started the second half on a 15-5 run to tie the game at 35-35 on a 3-pointer by Johnson. A subsequent 16-6 run by the Eagles gave them their biggest lead at 51-43 after a 3-pointer by Parmer with 6:35 left.

OC was ahead 53-45 with 4:38 left before the Bulldogs rallied with eight straight points to tie the game. After that, neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way.

OC will open Lone Star Conference play on Thursday night, hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville.
