Angelo State grinds out win over Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 5, 2019) – Angelo State (Texas) has one of the Lone Star Conference's top teams, but the Rambelles still had to grind out a 2-0 win over Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon at the Eagle Soccer Field.

Angelo State (7-1-1, 3-0-1 LSC) outshot the Eagles by a 17-7 count and led most of the way, but OC (0-9, 0-4) hung tough all the way and never let the Rambelles pull away.

With a strong south wind at their backs, the Rambelles took the lead in the seventh minute when Kiah Benham collected a loose ball just outside of the penalty box and sent a laser high into the back of the net, over the outstretched arms of OC goalkeeper Gabby Goddard.

Goddard finished with six saves and Sarah Albert cleared another Angelo State shot off the goal line, helping keep the Eagles close, but it was the Rambelles who scored the game's only other goal. In the 60th minute, Trenadey Scott broke free, took a pass from Avery McNeme and slotted the ball past Goddard in the 60th minute.

Oby Okeke took four of OC's seven shots, with Natalie Thomas, Maria Chilito and Corina Marin contributing one each. Angelo State goalkeeper Kira Miller made two saves.

Saturday's game ended a brutal stretch of the schedule for the Eagles, during which they faced four of the LSC's top five teams in succession. OC's next three games are on the road, against Texas A&M International (2-4-1, 1-1-1) on Thursday, St. Mary's (Texas) (2-6, 0-3) next Saturday and Midwestern State (Texas) (1-7-1, 0-4) on Oct. 17.
