PORTALES, N.M. (Oct. 31, 2019) – Needing a win to keep alive their postseason hopes, the Oklahoma Christian Eagles came through in dramatic fashion on Thursday night at Greyhound Stadium.
Taking advantage of two big breaks, OC erased a two-goal deficit in the final 33 minutes and
Carlos Trapero scored the decisive goal in the 87th minute as the Eagles stunned Eastern New Mexico 3-2.
OC (5-8, 2-5 Lone Star Conference) snapped a five-game skid and moved into seventh place in the LSC with six standings points. The top six teams will advance to the LSC postseason soccer tournament, with West Texas A&M (7-5-1, 3-3-1) currently in sixth with 10 points. OC will visit West Texas A&M on Saturday, needing a win to close the gap against the Buffaloes.
Both OC and Eastern New Mexico (9-5-1, 1-5-1) entered Thursday looking to move up the league standings and for much of the game, it looked like it would be the Greyhounds doing so. Joe Conway scored in the ninth minute to put ENMU ahead and Charlie Hackshall put the Greyhounds up 2-0 in the 51st minute. Eastern New Mexico, which outshot the Eagles 20-9, seemed in complete control.
But in the 68th minute, the Greyhounds put the ball into their net for an own goal and OC suddenly found life. OC was awarded a penalty kick in the 79th minute when ENMU's Gregory Franusic committed a foul in the penalty box and senior defender
Jaiden van der Heijden buried it for his first goal of the season, tying the game.
By then, the momentum had swung to the Eagles and they took advantage when
Thomas van der Meulen assisted on Trapero's second goal of the season, which put OC ahead. The Greyhounds didn't manage another shot the rest of the game.
OC goalkeeper
Anthony Trabichet kept the Eagles in the game with 10 saves – matching his season high – while his Eastern New Mexico counterpart, Jonas Kersten, had two saves.
