Thomas scores, but OC drops decision at Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Oct. 17, 2019) – Midwestern State (Texas) scored twice in the first 13 minutes and held on for a 3-1 win over Oklahoma Christian on Thursday night at Stang Park.

Kelly Cannistra scored twice for Midwestern State (3-8-1, 2-5 Lone Star Conference), while Natalie Thomas scored the lone goal for OC (1-11, 1-6).

Nicole Marsolek put the Mustangs ahead in the 10th minute, with Avery Lewis credited with the assist. Cannistra made it 2-0 in the 13th minutes, assisted by Alyssa Salinas.

Thomas, a sophomore from Colleyville, Texas, pulled the Eagles within 2-1 in the 21st minute, taking a feed from freshman Carson Hazel and blasting a shot from 25 yards out past Midwestern State goalkeeper Aubrey Pettett. It was Thomas' second goal of the soccer season.

Cannistra's second goal came in the 55th minute, with Sara Machado assisting. OC goalkeeper Gabby Goddard made six of her 10 saves after that, helping keep the Eagles close, but they proved unable to cut into the gap. It was the second time this season Goddard reached double digits in saves.

Pettett made two saves for the Mustangs, who outshot OC 19-8.

The Eagles will be at home next week, hosting LSC rivals Texas-Permian Basin on Thursday and Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Saturday.
