DALLAS (Jan. 24, 2019) – When Dallas Baptist (Texas) has the opportunity to play up-tempo, the Patriots often can overwhelm teams offensively and that's what happened to Oklahoma Christian on Thursday night.
Dallas Baptist shot 63.6 percent from the field in the first half and 57.1 percent for the game and used a pair of runs – one in each half – to put away OC 100-87 at the Burg Center in a rematch of last season's Heartland Conference tournament title game won by DBU.
DBU (13-6, 5-1 Heartland) had six players score in double figures, led by J.T. Harris with 18 points and Chandler Jacobs with 17. OC (6-11, 1-5) also had six double-figure scorers, including
Jordan Box with 17 points, but just couldn't keep up with the Patriots, who hit 13 of 25 3-point attempts.
"Give DBU all the credit," OC coach
Cory Cole said. "They came out from the jump and executed. They shot the ball lights-out and we didn't defend well at all tonight."
The Eagles took their last lead at 29-27 with 8:12 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by
Braden Eggleston, who scored 13 points, his best ever in an OC uniform, and it was 30-30 after
Marcus Blackwell (15 points) split a pair of free throws at the 7:30 mark.
DBU's Zach Lord hit a pair of 3-pointers in a 14-4 run that put the Patriots up 44-34 and they led 56-47 at halftime. OC gradually edged closer during the first 10 minutes of the half, pulling as close as 74-72 on a three-point play by
Brian Carey with 9:50 left.
A 13-4 run by the Patriots rebuilt their lead to double digits, though, and OC came no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Will Lienhard had a stat-stuffing performance for OC, scoring 14 points to go with nine rebounds, five blocked shots, four assists and two steals. He entered the game as NCAA Division II's rebounding leader and the Heartland's blocks leader.
Carey and
Aubrey Johnson each scored 10 points for OC, which shot 47.1 percent (32 of 68). For Dallas Baptist, Jordan Manse scored 14 points, Lord had 13 and Jonathyn Washington and Carson Hughes had 12 each.
OC will be back at home Saturday, hosting Lubbock Christian (Texas) at 3 p.m.
