OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 19, 2019) – You could say it was a good Saturday for
Addy Clift. The day began with the Oklahoma Christian senior guard featured in a spread on the front page of
The Oklahoman's sports section, comparing her to Oklahoma City Thunder star Paul George.
A few hours later, she provided another example of what all the fuss is about, breaking her own OC and Heartland Conference single-game scoring record with a 45-point outburst in a 104-53 romp over St. Mary's (Texas) in the Eagles' Nest. It was the second time this season Clift had set those school and league marks.
Clift putting up big numbers isn't a surprise – after all, she has four of the six 40-point women's basketball games in the Heartland's 20-season history – but a 51-point win over the Rattlers, who were ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA Division II national polls as recently as two weeks ago – certainly was unexpected.
So was a second consecutive 100-point game, something the Lady Eagles have now done only four times in the program's 42-season history. The last time was November 1995, when they opened the season by beating Paul Quinn (Texas) 102-60 and Southwestern Adventist (Texas) 122-29. OC never before had posted consecutive 100-point games against conference opponents.
OC (9-8, 2-2 Heartland) buried St. Mary's (11-5, 1-3) with a 43-4 run over a 12½-minute span during the first and second quarters and effectively put the game away early. The Lady Eagles set season highs for shooting (59 percent, 36 of 61) and 3-point shooting (63.6 percent, 14 of 22) and recorded 25 assists.
Clift will receive the headlines, but she wasn't the only offensive star for the Lady Eagles. Sophomore forward
Katie Mayo had 31 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, moving into OC's career top-10 list in the latter category. She keyed OC's 40-32 advantage on the boards and hit three of her four 3-point attempts, and her 16.2-point scoring average is now second in the Heartland – trailing only Clift.
"What a great team effort," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said. "The girls were really focused on the game plan and were able to communicate and execute the plan. This was our best team effort of the season and boy, are things better when you knock down shots."
Clift knocked down a lot of shots against the Rattlers, going 13 of 23 from the field, including 7 of 10 from 3-point range, and making 12 of 13 free throws. She also had six assists, five rebounds and two steals in a well-rounded performance.
A layup with 1:38 left capped Clift's 45-point performance, in which she broke her OC and Heartland mark of 44 points, set Dec. 17 in a 97-96 win over an Eastern New Mexico team that, like St. Mary's, entered the game ranked in the South Central Region's top 10.
Clift's latest outburst increased her season scoring average to 27.8 points, tops in Division II. Clift, who two days earlier set the Heartland career scoring record, increased her four-season total to 1,838 points.
"People don't know what they are missing by not coming to watch
Addy Clift play," Findley said. "She started us off, then Katie and the rest of the team caught fire as well."
St. Mary's grabbed a 5-0 lead to start the game, but Clift scored 21 points in the first quarter. It's not known if that's a Division II or Heartland record – neither record book lists points in a quarter as a category – but it's certainly an OC mark. She hit two free throws with :04 left to put the Lady Eagles up 35-9.
OC then scored the first eight points of the second quarter to extend its lead to 44-9. St. Mary's rallied within 51-23 by halftime, but Clift already had scored 28 by that point. OC pushed its lead to 47 points (88-41) by the end of the third quarter.
Freshman
Kendra Levings added 12 points and six rebounds for OC, while sophomore
Tyra Peck had a stat-stuffing performance with five points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals.
For the Rattlers, Hannah Wilson had 11 points and nine rebounds and Crystal Thomas added 10 points. Kaitlyn Walla, the Rattlers' leading scorer, managed only five points.
OC will visit league rival Newman (Kan.) on Thursday before returning home to face perennial Heartland power Lubbock Christian (Texas) next Saturday.
