AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 12, 2019) – Through three quarters, things were going well enough for Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon at St. Edward's (Texas). OC had just closed a 13-point deficit, briefly taken the lead and trailed by just one point at quarter's end.
But it fell apart in the fourth quarter for the Lady Eagles. St. Edward's outscored OC 31-12 over the final 10 minutes for a 93-73 win at the Recreation and Convocation Center, ending the Hilltoppers' six-game losing streak.
OC (7-8, 0-2 Heartland Conference) lost despite another strong scoring performance by senior guard
Addy Clift, who poured in 35 points on 11-of-25 shooting to move within 12 points of the Heartland's career scoring lead and into fifth on OC's all-time list. But the Lady Eagles struggled to generate offense, shooting just 36.8 from the field even as they took 21 more shots than did St. Edward's (9-7, 1-1).
The Hilltoppers, meanwhile, shot a sizzling 57.4 percent (27 of 47) from the field, including 47.6 percent (10 of 21) from 3-point range. St. Edward's also took advantage of 31 fouls by the Lady Eagles, connecting on 29 of 39 free-throw attempts, and outrebounded OC 39-29. Although no OC player fouled out, six ended the game with four fouls apiece.
"It's hard to beat teams shooting that well, especially on their home floor," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said. "Foul trouble hurt us, but we've got to get better on the defensive end, the boards, and get more balance with our scoring."
Bailey Hill went 6 of 6 from the field – hitting five 3-pointers – to score 22 points for St. Edward's, while Lexi Cunningham added 19 points and Maryam Wilcher had 16. Isabel Hernandez just missed a triple-double for St. Edward's with nine points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
Clift nearly offset all of them, scoring from all distances and many angles despite the Hilltoppers' best effort. She scored nine points in the first four minutes as OC raced to a 13-5 lead and the Lady Eagles still were ahead 23-22 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Eagles had only one basket in the first 5½ minutes of the second quarter, allowing St. Edward's to build a double-digit lead. Wilcher hit two free throws at the 4:28 mark to put the Hilltoppers up 40-27 and they took a 48-40 lead into halftime.
A 10-0 run by OC – which included a technical foul on Cunningham and three-point plays by
Katie Mayo and Bentsen – put OC up 55-52 with 4:27 left in the third quarter. St. Edward's eased back ahead and was up 62-61 heading into the fourth quarter.
OC had only three baskets in the final 10 minutes and 3-pointers by Hill and Cunningham in the first 38 seconds of the quarter started an 18-1 run by the Hilltoppers that effectively determined the game's result.
Bentsen, with a career-high 10 points, was the only OC player besides Clift to reach double figures in points.
With her sixth game of 30 or more points this season, Clift – the second-leading scorer in NCAA Division II at 26.8 points per game – increased her career point total to 1,767 points, moving past OC Athletic Hall of Famer Lauren Decker (1,755 points from 2002-06) into fifth on the program's all-time scoring list.
Clift also closed the gap on the Heartland career scoring list to 11 points behind Nia Torru, who had 1,778 points for Incarnate Word (Texas) from 2006-10.
OC will play its first Heartland home game of the season on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Texas A&M International.
