SHAWNEE, Okla. (Sept. 6, 2018) – Oklahoma Christian had to wait out a 91-minute lightning delay on Thursday night, but
Matheus Mantovani made sure it was worth it for the Eagles.
The senior midfielder beat Oklahoma Baptist goalkeeper Parker Lawter in the 82nd minute, putting a shot into the upper right corner of the net to give OC a 3-2 win over the Bison at the OBU soccer field.
As are most games between OC (2-1) and OBU (1-2), the contest was close all the way, with the Eagles posting a narrow 16-15 edge in shots. But it was the Bison who jumped ahead in the ninth minute, when Bruno Ferreira connected on a long shot from outside the penalty box.
OC's 6-foot-7 freshman forward,
Thomas van der Meulen, scored his first collegiate goal in the 16th minute after taking a cross from
Garrett Blume. But OBU regained the lead in the 32nd minute when Alejandro Castillo converted a penalty kick.
Blume again tied the game with a goal in the 64th minute before Mantovani put the Eagles ahead for the first time with his goal.
OC goalkeeper
Anthony Trabichet made the last of his seven saves on a shot by OBU's Italo Vichiatto in the final minute to preserve the win. Lawter also had seven saves for OBU.
The Eagles will be on the road again Saturday, visiting No. 8-ranked Northeastern State in Tahlequah for their final nonconference game of the season.
