TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Sept. 8, 2018) – No. 8-ranked Northeastern State rallied with four goals in the final 11 minutes to stun Oklahoma Christian 4-3 on Saturday night at Dan DeLoache Field.
OC (2-2), seeking what would have been its first win over a ranked NCAA Division II foe, jumped ahead quickly, scoring in the second minute when Thomas van der Muelen fed
Diego Vazquez.
In the 24th minute, van der Muelen scored off an assist from
Matheus Mantovani, and about 12 minutes later, Northeastern (4-0) changed goalkeepers, with Reuben Rabstein replacing the starter, Thomas Salenbien.
The Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 against Rabstein when Mantovani scored on a 20-yard strike in the 48th minute, and OC's defense hung tough for the next 30 minutes, despite the ball remaining in the Eagles' half of the field most of the second half.
But in the 80th minute, Joe Garcia scored for the RiverHawks and James Doyle followed a minute later on a scramble play in the penalty box. Twenty-eight seconds later, another scramble play resulted in Trevor reed scoring for Northeastern, tying the game. The three goals came in a span of 92 seconds.
Northeastern earned a penalty kick in the 86th minute, which Doyle converted to put the RiverHawks ahead 4-3. Rabstein saved a header shot by OC's
Luke Humphrey in the waning seconds to seal the win for Northeastern.
Northeastern outshot OC 22-8. OC goalkeeper
Anthony Trabichet took a hard-luck loss despite making nine saves. Salenbien and Rabstein each made two saves for Northeastern.
OC will begin Heartland Conference play on Thursday, hosting Newman (Kan.).
