ODESSA, Texas (Sept. 29, 2018) – The road continues to be Oklahoma Christian's friend this soccer season and as a result, they keep moving up the Heartland Conference pecking order.
Diego Vazquez scored a golden goal in the second overtime on Saturday to lift the Eagles past Texas-Permian Basin 2-1, giving OC (5-4-1, 3-2-1 Heartland) its second straight road win and third this season in four tries. The Eagles also have road wins in 2018 at Oklahoma Baptist and Lubbock Christian (Texas), the latter on Thursday.
The win moved OC into a tie for fourth in the Heartland standings, and if the season ended today, the Eagles would be among the six teams to qualify for the league postseason tournament. OC has a winning record after 10 games for the first time since 2015.
Matheus Mantovani scored his third goal in as many games, giving the Eagles the lead in the first minute when he took a pass from Vazquez and blasted the ball past UTPB goalkeeper Jameson Sato from 25 yards out. It was Mantovani's sixth goal this season, the most by an OC player since Ante Susic had six in 2015.
UTPB (1-9, 0-6) hit the crossbar twice in the first half, on shots by Danny Lugo in the 15th and 35th minutes. Jacob Tellez finally equalized for the Falcons on a free kick in the 54th minute before Lugo hit the crossbar a third time with a shot in the 78th minute.
UTPB outshot OC 16-15 for the game, but the Eagles had a 3-2 advantage in the overtime period. In the 105th minute, Mantovani passed the ball to Vazquez, who beat Sato for the game-winner.
OC goalkeeper
Anthony Trabichet needed to make only one save, but he still leads the conference with 56 saves this season. Sato made three saves for the Falcons.
OC will travel to Dallas Baptist (Texas) for a league game on Thursday before returning home to host No. 4-ranked Midwestern State (Texas) next Saturday.
