WICHITA, Kan. (Oct. 20, 2018) – Oklahoma Christian's road magic has dissipated and with it the Eagles' chances of making the Heartland Conference postseason soccer tournament.
Two late goals by Newman (Kan.) lifted the Jets to a 2-0 win over OC on Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field, eliminating the Eagles from the race for one of the six spots in the Heartland tournament. Newman (8-7-1, 5-6-1 Heartland) also avenged a 2-0 defeat to OC (6-9-1, 4-7-1) from earlier this season.
With 13 standings points, the Eagles trail sixth-place Texas A&M International by six points with two games remaining and TAMIU owns the tiebreaker over OC.
In the tightly contested game Saturday, Newman outshot OC by an 11-6 count but neither team broke through until the 73rd minute, when the Jets' Vince Couto took a free kick from Davide Panucci and scored from eight yards out.
Newman held the 1-0 lead until the final minute, when Ignacio Lerech sealed the win for the Jets with a goal from inside the penalty box.
OC goalkeeper
Anthony Trabichet made three saves, while his Newman counterpart, Jean Claude Consol, had four.
Senior midfielder
Zourab Tsopourachvili and junior defender
Garrett Blume each had two of OC's shots.
OC will wrap up its season next week with two more road games – at St. Edward's (Texas) on Thursday and No. 3-ranked Midwestern State (Texas) on Saturday.
