Lady Eagles fall to Newman in final seconds

Freshman Delyssa Miller had 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds in the loss at Newman.
Box Score WICHITA, Kan. (Jan. 27, 2018) – A late offensive drought and one too many turnovers proved to be Oklahoma Christian's undoing on Saturday afternoon against Newman (Kan.) at Fugate Gymnasium.

OC scored only two points in the final 2:39 and lost possession of the basketball on a disputed play in the final seconds, allowing Newman to pull out a 70-67 win.

"There's not much to say," OC coach Stephanie Findley said. "Five straight road games, with a young team, is wearing on us. It's wearing on me."

OC (5-14, 1-6 Heartland Conference) led 65-60 after consecutive baskets by Addy Clift, the latter a 3-pointer with 2:39 left. But the breaks, and the calls, went against the Lady Eagles after that.

Newman (14-8, 5-3) took a 66-65 lead on an off-balance jumper by Abbey George with 36.7 seconds left. An OC turnover led to free throws for the Jets and Nia Roberts hit 1 of 2 to put Newman up by two points with 18.5 seconds left.

OC freshman guard Maddison Collyer tied the game with a driving layup with 10.2 seconds left, and then the real fireworks began.  Officials called OC's Tyra Peck for a foul on a drive by Dede Johnson with 4.4 seconds left and Johnson made the second free throw to put the Jets back ahead.

OC called timeout and advanced the ball to the frontcourt. Collyer took the inbounds pass and had an opening along the baseline, but as she drove toward the basket, she appeared to be nudged out of bounds by a Newman defender. Officials instead ruled that Collyer had stepped out of bounds of her own volition, and then called a technical foul on Findley with 2.2 seconds left after she protested what officially was her team's 18th turnover.

Bria DeGrate made 1 of the 2 technical free throws, and after another OC foul, DeGrate again went 1 of 2 from the line with eight-tenths of a second left to make it 70-67. Without a timeout left, OC's Hannah Bentsen threw a long inbounds pass toward midcourt but it was tipped away as time expired.

There were plenty of positives for OC, despite the result. The Lady Eagles outrebounded Newman 44-34 and led by as many as 12 points in the first half. OC also limited Newman's star, Hannah Alexander, to four second-half points after she'd scored 15 in the first half.

"We outrebounded them," Findley said. "The girls worked hard and we did a good job with our defensive game plan after halftime. We were fighting on that end. But we had too many turnovers and too many missed shots. We didn't get a lot of production, it seemed like, when we got the ball into the paint."

OC led 32-20 with 3:24 left in the first half after a reverse layup by Bentsen, but Newman closed on a 13-3 run to pull within 35-33 at halftime. The Jets went up early in the third quarter and led 52-45 after two free throws by Alexander made it 52-45 at the 2:26 mark, but OC hung tough and led 60-58 after consecutive baskets by Delyssa Miller, the latter with 5:06 left in the game.

Miller had 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds for the Lady Eagles. Clift led OC with 20 points, while Collyer added 15. Johnson scored 15 points for Newman, while Haley Albers had 11 and DeGrate 10.

The Lady Eagles will wrap up their five-game Heartland road stretch on Thursday, visiting St. Edward's (Texas). Two days later, OC will play its first home game since Jan. 6, when it will host Rogers State.
