Early run of Lubbock Christian 3s lifts Chaparrals past Eagles

Keilan Horton shoots during Thursday's loss at Lubbock Christian. The senior hit 1,000 points for his college career during the game.
Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas (Feb. 23, 2017) – Lubbock Christian (Texas) hit seven of its first eight 3-point attempts to build a large early lead and cruised to an 83-60 win over Oklahoma Christian on Thursday night in the Rip Griffin Center.

Six different Chaparrals hit at least one 3-pointer as Lubbock Christian went 12-of-19 from behind the arc. Ridrell Holman led the way, scoring 25 points and going 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

OC (8-17, 3-14 Heartland Conference) had only two players reach double figures in scoring – seniors Keilan Horton (12 points) and John Moon (10 points).

"We didn't come ready to play and they jumped on us like good teams do," OC men's basketball coach Cory Cole said. "Give them credit as they outplayed us the entire night. We played in spurts. We couldn't get the stop or score when we needed to sustain a run."

OC led once, at 3-2 after a three-point play by Horton with 17:52 left in the first half. Fourteen seconds later, Holman's first 3-pointer started a 12-0 run by Lubbock Christian (17-10, 11-6) and the Chaparrals never looked back.

Lubbock Christian led by as many as 20 points in the first half before settling for a 44-27 halftime lead. OC pulled within 15 points on a basket by Moon a minute into the second half, but the Chaparrals answered with a 9-2 run to build their lead to 22 points at 53-31 with 16:35 left.

The Eagles came no closer than 18 points after that.

Marcus Arrington added 12 points for Lubbock Christian, while Brennen Fowler had eight points and 11 rebounds.

Horton, a senior who is finishing out his lone season at OC, did hit the 1,000-point scoring mark for his college career. The 6-foot guard from Inglewood, Calif., scored 676 points during his two seasons at Santa Monica (Calif.) College (2012-13 and 2013-14) and has 328 points this season at OC.

Moon raised his career scoring total to 1,856 points. He's third on the Heartland's all-time scoring list, 17 points behind second-place Pierce Caldwell, who played for Incarnate Word from 2006-10. Moon leads fourth-place Seth Youngblood of Arkansas-Fort Smith by 23 points. Moon has one game remaining in his career, while Youngblood has at least two, and maybe more in the Heartland tournament.

OC will finish its season on Saturday at Dallas Baptist (Texas), which is in a four-way tie for first in the Heartland standings at 12-5.

"We have one opportunity left to take advantage of on Saturday," Cole said.
