Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 26, 2017) – From a delay of almost two hours at the start of the game, to the wind changing directions at halftime, to the combined 46 shots between the teams, much was unusual about Oklahoma Christian's game Thursday against Newman (Kan.).
That included the score, as Newman's potent offense steadily gained steam as the Jets beat OC 7-2 at the Eagle Soccer Field. Newman (10-5-2, 7-5-2 Heartland Conference) completed a season sweep of OC (2-15, 1-12).
Newman, which entered the game second in the Heartland in goals scored, didn't get on the board until the 25th minute, when Colleen Howland scored the first of her three goals. Besides the hat trick, Howland also had two assists for the Jets.
OC quickly equalized, when
Darrian Palacios lofted a shot from about 30 yards out that went over the head of Newman goalkeeper Ashley Sweetnam in the 28th minute. It was Palacios' second goal of the season.
But before halftime, Howland assisted on a goal by Lexi Clark in the 34th minute, then scored one of her own in the 36th minute, giving Newman a 3-1 halftime lead.
A cold front came through at halftime and the wind switched from the southwest to the north, gusting to 25 mph and higher. OC was the beneficiary, with that wind at its back, and took 12 of its 17 shots after halftime.
But Howland assisted on Amy Strath's header in the 69th minute to give the Jets a 4-1 lead. OC freshman
Corina Marin's shot from 10 yards out in the 77th minute pulled OC within 4-2, but the Jets closed strong, with three goals in the final four minutes – by Howland, Emma Stewart and Sheree Molina.
Newman eventually finished with 29 shots, keeping OC goalkeeper
Addison Milner busy. Milner matched her season high with 11 saves, including smothering a penalty kick by Howland in the eighth minute. It was Milner's sixth double-digit save performance of the season and raised her league-leading total to 119.
Sweetnam made seven saves for Newman.
OC will close the season Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Rogers State. Five seniors –
Courtney Nixon,
Chelsea Key,
Madeline Roseke,
Madison Brinkman and
Monique Raygoza – will be honored before the game.
