Lady Eagles hang on for win over Northwestern Oklahoma State

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 27, 2016) – It certainly wasn't as clean as coach Randall Robison would have liked, but it was a win for Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday against Northwestern Oklahoma State, and that's ultimately what mattered.

OC fell behind early, scored three times in an 11-minute span, than hung on for a 3-2 decision over the winless Rangers at the Eagle Soccer Field. Freshman Dakota Milner proved to be the Lady Eagles' offensive star, recording her first two career goals on a night when her team ultimately needed them.

OC (3-6) outshot Northwestern (0-7) by a 25-13 count and controlled the action for long stretches, but the Rangers took advantage of a pair of defensive errors by OC to keep the game too interesting for Robison's liking.

"You don't want to complain about a win, but I've got to tell you, the two mistakes that led to their goals are things that just simply can't happen," Robison said. "Our girls know that, but they have to execute better. We got very lax on the back line and probably fortunate that it was only those two (goals), to be honest with you.

"We moved the ball really, really well. I thought that we went forward really, really well. … I don't think the scoreline is indicative of how we played, but like we tell the girls all the time, your record is your performance and your performance is your record. We just simply have to be better than what we were in finishing out the game."

Northwestern, which had scored only two goals all season entering the game, stunned OC by taking the lead in the fifth minute. OC's defense blocked an initial shot by Yazmin Gomez, but her follow shot from about 14 yards out slid into the lower right corner of the net.

A minute later, the match was even again after Milner scored from five yards out after a cross from the right side by Darrian Palacios. In the ninth minute, OC sophomore midfielder Rubi Villegas Aguilar dribbled through the Northwestern defense and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Briana Legaspi, putting OC up 2-1.

In the 17th minute, OC made it 3-1. Michell Fuentes sent an excellent through ball that Palacios just redirected toward Milner, whose volley from 12 yards easily beat Legaspi.

Milner nearly recorded what would have been OC's first hat trick since the 2011 season, as she made a strong run down the field and earned herself an open look from about 15 yards, but her shot from the right side slid just past the left post and she exited the game moments later.

"Coco has got a big upside," Robison said. "She's already had a good start. She attacks the goal really, really well. She doesn't back off of anything. That's going to help. She's only going to get better."

The Rangers pulled within 3-2 in the 76th minute, as Kelsey Henneha collected a loose ball in the penalty box and shot from six yards out. But the Rangers weren't able to mount a significant threat the rest of the way, managing only two shots from long distance, with OC goalkeeper Carina Schanz saving one of them.

Schanz finished with three saves for OC, while Legaspi had nine for Northwestern.

Robison subbed liberally during the game, no doubt with an eye on the two Heartland Conference games in the next four days. OC will host Rogers State on Thursday night, then Newman (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon.

"We needed to manage the game tonight, both with subs and on the field, in terms of maybe not expending any more energy than what we needed," he said. "It's going to be a tough end of the week. Rogers is an improved team this year. Newman is an improved team this year. We like to think we are. I think they will be two very good games"
