Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 22, 2016) – Please excuse Oklahoma Christian's women's soccer team if it's feeling snakebit when it comes to hosting Heartland Conference power Dallas Baptist (Texas).
For the second straight year at the Eagle Soccer Field, OC played the Patriots on even terms and took them to overtime, seeking a breakthrough result. But again, there was only heartbreak for the Lady Eagles, as McKenna Namken scored in the second minute of the extra period to give Dallas Baptist a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.
Dallas Baptist (8-5-3, 8-2-2 Heartland) looks set for a second-place finish in the conference this year after advancing all the way to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals last year. But OC (4-10-2, 2-8-2) more than held its own, as the Patriots held only a 13-10 advantage in shots and OC led 7-6 in shots on goal.
OC caught a break when a shot by DBU's Elise Royer hit the post in the eighth minute, and both goalkeepers maintained the shutout through the rest of regulation. OC's
Carina Schanz made five saves, while Dallas Baptist's Hope Koym had seven and extended the Patriots' shutout streak in conference play to 420 minutes, the equivalent of more than four regulation games.
In the first two minutes of overtime, Dallas Baptist immediately put pressure on the Lady Eagles' defense and earned three corner kicks. On the third, OC was unable to clear away the ball, resulting in a scramble in front of the net. Namken took advantage to score the golden goal and end the game.
The game was the final one at home for two OC seniors, defender
Amanda Cooper and forward
Sophia Brazil. The Lady Eagles will wrap up their season with a pair of road games next week, at Newman (Kan.) on Thursday night and Rogers State next Saturday afternoon.
