Lady Eagles fall behind early, lose at St. Mary’s

Rubi Villegas Aguilar scored her sixth goal of the season in the loss at St. Mary's.
Box Score SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 13, 2016) – A four-game unbeaten streak had put Oklahoma Christian in contention for one of four spots in the Heartland Conference postseason women's soccer tournament, but the Lady Eagles weren't able to sustain that momentum on Thursday at St. Mary's (Texas).

St. Mary's jumped ahead in the first five minutes on a penalty kick and pulled away for a 4-1 win over OC at Sigma Beta Chi Field, completing a regular-season sweep of the Lady Eagles.

OC (4-7-2, 2-5-2 Heartland) stayed in sixth place in the league standings with eight points and now trails Lubbock Christian (Texas) and St. Mary's – who are tied for third place – by nine points with five games remaining. OC fell to the Rattlers despite outshooting them 18-13.

"Too many missed opportunities," OC coach Randall Robison said. "We are a better team than what we showed. Poor decisions in critical parts of the game put us under early. During the last 20 minutes we showed some heart. That was a good response, but we have to show that same heart from the opening minute."

In the fifth minute, OC was called for a foul in the penalty box and Roxy Cruz Santory converted the penalty kick, slotting her ball into the lower right corner, just beyond the outstretched fingertips of OC goalkeeper Carina Schanz.

Madeline Roseke almost tied the game for OC in the 11th minute, but her shot rebounded off the post. Heather Dawson then put St. Mary's (7-3-2, 5-2-2) up 2-0 in the 26th minute, punching her shot into the lower left corner of the goal. In the 44th minute, Whitney Clark eluded Schanz on a breakaway and converted to make it 3-0.

Dawson ended all doubt in the 71st minute, scoring after Schanz left her goal line while chasing a loose ball. OC scored in the 76th minute, when Rubi Villegas Aguilar converted a penalty kick for her sixth goal of the season.

Schanz finished with six saves for OC, while St. Mary's goalkeeper Erin Longford had eight saves.

OC will visit winless Texas A&M International on Saturday, hoping to finish a season sweep of the Dustdevils.
