Balanced Newman-OC soccer game ends in draw

OC goalkeeper Carina Schanz posted her fifth career shutout in the draw against Newman.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 1, 2016) – Games don't come much more even than the one played by Oklahoma Christian and Newman (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon at the Eagle Soccer Field.

So it probably was appropriate the game ended in a scoreless tie, capping a week in which OC (4-6-1, 2-4-1 Heartland Conference) went undefeated in three games and posted shutouts in two of those.

Newman (3-4-4, 2-3-2) outshot the Lady Eagles 21-20 and the saves were nearly even as well, as OC's Carina Schanz had eight and Newman's Ashley Sweetnam (two) and Kelsi Langley (five) combined for seven.

One of those saves by Schanz played a key part on what probably was the most important play of the game. In the waning seconds of regulation, Newman's Vanessa Ortiz fired a shot from about 15 yards out that Schanz came off of the goal line to block, but was unable to control.

With the goal open, the rebound caromed to the Jets' Cydney Padilla, who instead of settling the ball tried to one-time her follow shot. As a result, it sailed high over the crossbar moments before time expired.

Padilla again fired high on an open shot from 15 yards in the 96th minute, which proved to be the best chance either team had in extra time.

OC's primary offensive sparkplug was midfielder Rubi Villegas Aguilar, who took seven shots, three of those on goal, while constantly drawing attention from two and three Newman defenders.

Schanz posted the fifth shutout of her OC career by blanking the Jets. It was only the third scoreless tie for OC since Randall Robison became the Lady Eagles' coach in 2009.

The Lady Eagles will finish their current six-game homestand next Saturday, when they will host Heartland rival Lubbock Christian (Texas). Lubbock Christian beat OC 4-0 in a meeting earlier this season in Lubbock, Texas.
