Moon reaches 1K, but Aggies hit 12 3s to knock off OC

Stephen Amalong scored a career-high five points for OC in the loss at Oklahoma Panhandle State.
Box Score GOODWELL, Okla. (Jan. 7, 2016) – Oklahoma Christian's John Moon sailed past the 1,000-point scoring mark on Thursday night at Oklahoma Panhandle State, but even the Heartland Conference's best post player couldn't offset the Aggies' stellar 3-point shooting.

Panhandle State hit 12 3-pointers – 11 of those in the first half – and kept the Eagles from mounting any serious challenge in the second half while posting an 83-72 win over OC at Oscar Williams Field House.

It was the second straight season in which OPSU (8-5, 1-4 Heartland) beat the Eagles. Last season, the Aggies stunned OC in the Eagles' Nest before OC returned the favor with a 30-point thumping in the Panhandle.

This time around, OC (4-8, 1-3) couldn't keep up with the Aggies, who opened the game with four 3-pointers in the first four minutes and never trailed after that. Six different Aggies hit at least one shot from behind the arc as they finished 12-of-28 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range.

Overall, the Aggies shot 52.7 percent (29 of 55). All five Panhandle State starters scored in double figures, led by Zoran Arsenovic (20 points), Melvin Mitchell (15 points) and Antonio Manns Jr. (15 points). They also took care of the ball, as the Aggies committed only six turnovers, 10 fewer than OC.

Moon, the conference's leading scorer, had 28 points, nine rebounds and one blocked shot (extending his streak of having at least one block to 37 games). The junior went 11-of-16 from the field and finished the game with 1,021 points, becoming the 39th men's player in OC history to reach the 1,000-point mark.

But only one other OC player reached double figures – Elijah Strickland, who had 12 points.

Despite the Aggies' first-half barrage, OC trailed only 43-33 at halftime and pulled within seven points when Strickland opened the second half with a 3-pointer. But that was as close as the Eagles would come the rest of the game, as Panhandle State kept knocking down shots.

OC didn't cut the gap to single digits again until 1:31 was left, when the Eagles came within 76-67 on a 3-pointer by Jordan Rutherford. The Aggies hit 4-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal their win.

The Eagles will continue their road trip Saturday afternoon at Lubbock Christian (Texas).
