Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 25, 2015) – Maybe the best way to describe Oklahoma Christian's win over Texas Wesleyan on Friday night was workmanlike.
After a slow start, the Lady Eagles controlled the action most of the game and picked up second-half goals from
Areli Bermudez Delgado and
Shaye Hatchette to finish off a 2-0 win at the Eagle Soccer Field.
OC (2-3-1) ended a three-game winning streak by NAIA foe Texas Wesleyan (5-2) while ending a frustrating two-game skid of its own, during which the Lady Eagles dropped a pair of 1-0 decisions.
"We felt coming into this year, and I think the girls have showed, that when we play our game, and when we make good choices on the field, we can compete with anybody," OC coach
Randall Robison said. "Hopefully the girls are buying into it. I think they are. They're in a good place tonight, so hopefully we can stay in that place through next week."
After a scoreless first half – during which OC had an apparent early goal overruled because of an offside call – Texas Wesleyan changed goalkeepers, going from Nikki Lockwood, who had made two saves, to freshman Jocelyn Cain, who had played only seven minutes all season entering Friday.
Eventually, the Lady Eagles took advantage. In the 56th minute,
Darrian Palacios sent in a cross from the right side to Bermudez Delgado, who caught Cain off balance while scoring from about 10 yards out.
"We had plenty of opportunities before then to break through there," Robison said. "We really thought that's what we needed, something to break that open, and things would happen after that."
But before that happened, the Rams nearly tied the game in the 77th minute on a shot by Theresa Garsztecki that OC defender
Karolina Srutkova cleared off the goal line.
OC then sealed the win in the 84th minute. Cain was able to save a shot by
Sydni Wiles but couldn't corral the ball before OC freshman
Shaye Hatchette knocked home the rebound for her first collegiate goal.
"I was real happy with what we created all across the field," Robison said. "I was happy with our possession, but we've got to be a little more efficient in the final third (of the field). The important thing is that we're creating those opportunities. That is something we've struggled with – the final pass in the final third. I thought we were much, much better at it tonight."
The Lady Eagles outshot Texas Wesleyan 17-11. Cain made one save in the second half. OC goalkeeper
Carina Schanz had four saves while recording her second shutout of the season.
OC will host nonconference foe McKendree (Ill.) on Tuesday before opening Heartland Conference play at home against the NCAA Division II league's top two teams – St. Edward's (Texas) on Thursday and Dallas Baptist (Texas) on Saturday.
