Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 17, 2015) – As the game between Oklahoma Christian and Southwestern Oklahoma State developed on Thursday night at the Eagle Soccer Field, it became apparent that one break likely would decide the winner.
Southwestern received two such breaks – one defensive and one offensive – with the latter coming in the 86th minute on a goal by Hannah Elrod that lifted the Bulldogs to a 1-0 win in OC's women's home opener.
In what was a taut defensive game throughout, both teams struggled to find opportunities to score, with Southwestern (3-2) managing only 11 shots to OC's seven. OC goalkeeper
Carina Schanz kept the Lady Eagles in the game with her five saves, a couple on point-blank opportunities for Southwestern.
OC's best scoring chance came in the 79th minute off a set piece.
Sydni Wiles sent a corner kick into the box and
Areli Bermudez Delgado delivered a strong header toward the far post, but Southwestern's Shelley Mueller was standing by the post and cleared the ball away, even as her goalkeeper was out of position.
About seven minutes later, Elrod collected the ball about 25 yards out, took a quick touch to settle it and then fired a blast through a crowd and past Schanz into the upper half of the net.
The Lady Eagles didn't manage a shot after that. A foul was called on Southwestern with about 10 seconds to go, about 35 yards from the goal, but with the clock winding down, OC had to rush the free kick, short-circuiting a scoring chance.
Southwestern goalkeeper Courtney Flores was credited with one save.
OC (1-2-1) will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m., when the Lady Eagles visit Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva.
