Randall ends career with double-double, but Eagles fall at Texas-Permian Basin

Box Score ODESSA, Texas (Feb. 28, 2015) – Eric Randall did not go quietly for Oklahoma Christian, but the way Texas-Permian Basin was shooting 3-pointers, it wasn't nearly enough for the Eagles on Saturday afternoon in the Falcon Dome.

Playing his final basketball game after six seasons with the Eagles, Randall posted his fourth double-double of the season – and sixth of his career – with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but OC couldn't overcome UTPB's early long-range barrage and fell 92-60 in the season finale.

Madison Turner went 6-of-8 from 3-point range and scored 20 points for UTPB (17-11, 12-8 Heartland Conference), which advanced to the NCAA Division II league's four-team postseason tournament with the win. OC (6-20, 4-16) closed out what has been a frustrating season, although one punctuated by impressive late-season wins over Dallas Baptist (Texas) and Arkansas-Fort Smith.

"What I will remember most about this team are the people," OC coach Dan Hays said. "These are good kids. What they have on their chest – Oklahoma Christian – is who they are. That's not always the case in colleges around the country.

"I was very, very proud of our team. It was a tough year for wins and losses. I understand that. But it was a wonderful year in relationships and dealing with 16 guys who really get it. They never gave up. "

Outside of the 6-foot-9 Randall and 7-foot center John Moon – who scored 15 points – the Eagles didn't receive consistent offensive production. Meanwhile, UTPB had four players score in double figures, as Thomas Feeney (18 points), Scooter Holmes (15 points) and Xavier Martin (12 points) joined Turner.

The Falcons hit five 3-pointers in the first five minutes and went 10-of-19 from 3-point range in the first half, while OC was 8-of-31 overall from the field. Not surprisingly, UTPB held a commanding 55-23 halftime lead.

"We ran into a hot, hot, hot team in the first half," Hays said.

Hays' challenge to his team was to beat the Falcons in the second half, and OC came close, playing UTPB to a 37-37 tie after intermission.

Randall finished his OC career with 1,020 points, placing him 38th on the program's all-time scoring list. He finished strong, hitting the game-winning shot in the final second of OC's win over Arkansas-Fort Smith last Saturday on Senior Day and posting two double-doubles in his final three collegiate games.

As for OC's other two seniors, both had bright spots on Saturday. Forward Josh Faurot had four points, four rebounds and one blocked shot, while guard Casey Covalt scored a late basket to finish with two points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

"The three seniors we have … are just three of the absolute best young men that you could ever have," Hays said. "I wouldn't trade a second with those guys. They've been on a conference championship team. They played in Kansas City, Mo., at the NAIA (tournament). They played for a national championship in the NCCAA. Those guys are highly decorated in what they've done and I'm just proud to say I coached them."

Everyone else on OC's roster should return, including guards Deric Shelton and Zach Norris, who missed all or most of the season due to injury, and forward Chiza Ntirata, who redshirted after transferring from Grayson (Texas) College.

"These are special guys," Hays said. "They are student-athletes and I'm proud of them. Hopefully we've got good things ahead of us."
