Stanford named as Heartland Conference player of the week

OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 7, 2015) – For the first time this season and the third time in her career, Oklahoma Christian forward McKenzie Stanford was named Monday as the Heartland Conference's women's basketball player of the week.

Stanford, a 6-foot junior from Perkins, averaged 19.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals last week as OC beat St. Gregory's and lost close games against Texas Woman's and No. 4-ranked West Texas A&M.

She was OC's leading scorer, with 22 points in only 17 minutes, as the Lady Eagles broke the program record for most points in a game in a 123-76 rout of St. Gregory's on Tuesday. The 123 points were the most scored this season by an NCAA Division II team.

Stanford followed with her third career double-double in a 79-70 loss at Texas Woman's, finishing with 18 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high five steals. On Saturday, she led OC with 19 points and seven rebounds as the Lady Eagles pushed powerful West Texas A&M to the limit – leading well into the fourth quarter – before falling 76-70.

Stanford earned the conference's weekly honor twice last season en route to being honored on the All-Heartland second-team list.

OC will return to action Tuesday at 6 p.m., when the Lady Eagles travel across town to Bethany to face longtime archrival Southern Nazarene.
