Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. (Oct. 27, 2014) – The offensive floodgates opened for Oklahoma Christian late in its game Monday afternoon at Rogers State, but not quite enough for the Lady Eagles to pick up an elusive Heartland Conference win.
After falling behind 2-0, OC scored twice in the final 12 minutes, but Rogers State also picked up a late goal from Blair Thomas that proved to be the difference in a 3-2 decision over the Lady Eagles at Soldier Field.
Perhaps the most frustrating thing for OC (1-13-2, 0-5-1 Heartland) was the 10 offside calls that went against the Lady Eagles. Two of those came in the closing moments as OC tried to rally for a potential game-tying goal.
"During the last 15 minutes, we created numerous opportunities, even into the wind," OC coach
Randall Robison said. "Our girls were very unlucky for the two offside calls to go against them late in the game. We were in fairly both times and easily could have tied the game on either one. We waited too long to play with the intensity needed to win. This will be a tough lesson for our team to learn."
As the score indicated, it was an evenly played game, with both teams attempting 18 shots. With the wind in the first half, OC outshot Rogers State 11-2, while the Hillcats posted a 16-7 edge after halftime.
OC's
Estefania Bermudez Delgado hit the crossbar with a shot in the 54th minute, and less than a minute later, Rogers State (2-14, 2-5) was the first to break through, when Thomas and Jianna Cervantes assisted on a goal by Leigh Ann Craig. In the 62nd minute, the Hillcats went up 2-0 when Cervantes took a pass from Thomas and shot past OC goalkeeper
Lindsey Williams from 15 yards out.
Courtney Nixon pulled OC within 2-1 in the 79th minute, with her goal assisted by
Estefania Bermudez Delgado. But less than four minutes later, a turnover by OC led to an unassisted goal by Thomas that again gave the Hillcats a two-goal bulge.
The Lady Eagles earned a penalty kick in the 85th minute, which Bermudez Delgado converted to make it 3-2. After that, OC kept up the offensive pressure, with Nixon taking two shots in the final four minutes, with one of them requiring saves by Rogers State goalkeeper Teri Cocke.
Cocke finished with six saves, while Williams was credited with five saves.
OC's final two games of the season will be at home – against Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday and Lubbock Christian (Texas) next Monday.
