OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 27, 2012) – Ashley Cox came off the bench to record a goal and an assist as visiting Dallas Baptist (Texas) beat Oklahoma Christian 3-0 on a soggy Eagle Soccer Field on Thursday.
OC (1-6) dropped its sixth straight game after a season-opening win over USAO. The Lady Eagles did have a few bright spots, including a 13-save performance by freshman Anna Walker, who went the distance in the goal for the first time this season.
Heavy rains that started late Monday and continued for much of the day Tuesday left the field saturated and the players had to deal with standing water on parts of the field and ankle-deep mud on the sidelines.
Dallas Baptist (7-2) had won its previous two games against Heartland Conference foes by scores of 10-0 over McMurry (Texas) and 11-0 over Texas-Permian Basin. The Patriots outshot OC 27-3, but the Lady Eagles' defense limited another potential DBU offensive outburst.
It took until the 26th minute for DBU to score. A crossing pass by Cox deflected off an OC defender to Lindsey Eccles, who scored her seventh goal of the season on a 10-yard shot.
In the 38th minute, Cox got the ball off a deflection from a defender and had a wide-open shot against Walker.
DBU made it 3-0 in the final seconds of the first half. Kailey Roberts' corner kick found Sara Boren, who crossed it into the box to a waiting Lea Sedwick, who headed it past Walker.
OC didn't have a shot until the final 25 minutes and only one of the Lady Eagles' three attempts – by Katie Wertz – was on goal. DBU goalkeeper Kerry Edwards stopped that shot for her only save.
"I'm proud of how the girls battled all game," OC coach Randall Robison said. "The conditions were tough for both teams. We possessed the ball well and played good soccer, I thought. Three mistakes in the first half were critical. DBU is too great of a team to give them three opportunities like that and expect to win."
The Lady Eagles will host another Heartland Conference team, St. Edward's (Texas), on Saturday at noon.
