Lady Eagles end scoreless streak but fall 3-1 at TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas (Sept. 22, 2012) – Addie Ryan's first-half goal ended a long scoreless streak for Oklahoma Christian but the Lady Eagles lost 3-1 at Texas A&M International on Saturday afternoon.

OC (1-4) dropped its fourth straight game – all on the road – while TAMIU (5-1) won its fifth straight game, although the Dustdevils didn't record a shutout as they had in their previous four games. TAMIU already has won more women's soccer games in 2012 than it has in any since making the move to NCAA Division II in 2006.

OC showed an improved offensive spark against the Dustdevils. After taking only eight shots combined in losses at Southwestern Oklahoma State, Newman (Kan.) and St. Mary's (Texas), the Lady Eagles recorded a season-high 17 shots (compared to 18 for TAMIU) and twice nearly tied the game before a TAMIU goal in 70th minute effectively sealed the win for the Dustdevils.

"This was our most complete game," OC coach Randall Robison said. "Ninety minutes of playing physical. Ninety minutes of playing our soccer. We just need to clean up a couple of individual mistakes. I'm very proud of how we competed today."

TAMIU took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Sam Zerelli controlled the ball inside the penalty box and passed with her back heel to Karina Garcia, whose shot went off the hands of OC goalkeeper Anna Walker, off the post and into the net.

Zerelli also assisted on the Dustdevils' second goal, feeding Jessica Parker from the right side. Parker beat Walker one-on-one to put TAMIU up 2-0 in the 23rd minute.

Ryan scored her first goal of the season – and OC's first since its season opener – in the 27th minute, collecting a loose ball and beating TAMIU goalkeeper Aissa Pedraza. Ryan fired just wide in the 39th minute, allowing TAMIU to make it to halftime with a 2-1 lead.

In the 66th minute, Callie White grazed the crossbar with a shot that could have pulled OC even. About four minutes later, TAMIU extended its lead to 3-1 as Claudia De Lara passed to Garcia at the edge of the penalty box and Garcia dribbled down the middle before shooting past OC goalkeeper Lindsey Williams.

Walker, who made her first career start, had four saves in goal, while Williams – who started the second half – made two saves. Pedraza was credited with four saves for the Dustdevils.

White led OC with six shots while Ryan had five shots.

Although TAMIU is one of OC's new Heartland Conference rivals, the result of the game won't count in the conference standings, because OC is in the first year of the Division II membership process. The game does count toward both teams' overall records.

The Lady Eagles will play their home opener on Tuesday, when they host Southwestern Christian at 7 p.m.
