OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (March 5, 2008) – Lubbock Christian beat Oklahoma Christian 72-53 in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament presented by Orthopedic Solutions Wednesday afternoon in the Eagles' Nest.
Ninth-seeded LCU used a 48-21 second-half edge to better eighth-seeded OC's 32-24 halftime lead.
The home-standing Eagles started the game on an 8-2 run Wednesday. David Jackson and Jason Taylor hit three-pointers and Kyle Tefft added two free throws at 16:25 to give OC an 8-2 edge.
LCU led 9-8 after consecutive Bernardo Rocha scores, but OC went on a 10-2 charge to open up an 18-11 edge by the 11:13 point. Jeff Crocker found Chad Endres for an easy fast-break score to seal the run.
The Chaparrals trimmed OC's lead down to one point at the 8:01, 7:06 and 4:30 marks before six-straight Tefft points pushed the lead back out to 30-23 by 2:42.
John Powell stroked 2-of-2 free throws with two seconds left in the half to send OC to a 32-24 halftime lead. The eight-point advantage was the biggest for either team yet.
Taylor banked home a cutting score at the 18-minute mark of the second stanza to hand the Eagles' their first double-digit lead of the game. The first-team All-SAC selection made it 36-26.
But 11-straight LCU points culminated when D.J. Cameron sunk a three-pointer to give the Chaps a 37-36 at 14:33. The edge was LCU's first since the 12:55 mark of the opening half.
Jackson hit a 16-footer on the other end to lift OC on top 38-37. LCU again went up 39-38, before Jackson hit from deep at 13:40 to make it 41-38 Eagles.
The Chaparrals kept coming though. LCU rattled off a 10-1 run to grab a 48-42 lead at the 9:44 point.
The Eagles narrowed their deficit to 50-47 on a Jackson triple at 7:50, but the Chaps fired back with a 9-0 rally of their own to go up 59-47 by 5:42.
The jaunt was part of an eventual 17-4 LCU run. Tommy Lane all but sealed it when he picked a steal, then slammed home two at the 1:35 point to put the Chaparrals up 67-51.
LCU went on to the 19-point win to avenge OC's 71-53 win on Feb. 16. LCU beat OC 66-59 on Jan. 10 in Lubbock.
Jackson led the Eagles with 14 points on 4-of-8 three-point shooting. Tefft added 10 points, while Taylor added a foul-hampered nine points and five rebounds.
Lane led all scorers with 23 points.
The loss ends OC's season and takes the Eagles' final record to 13-17. OC returns every player off this year's roster to next year's squad.
LCU advances to tomorrow night's tournament quarterfinal against No. 1-seed Oklahoma City.
