Oklahoma Christian University upset No. 4 ranked Lubbock Christian University, 74-69, coming back from a 17 point deficit to win in overtime here Jan. 22.
Riding the biggest game of Jarred Merrill's career, 35 points and a record setting 23 rebounds, the Eagles handed the visiting Chaparrals their first Sooner Conference loss after five victories and evened OC's conference record at 3-3. Overall the Eagles are now 13-4 and LCU is 12-4.
Merrill scored 25 of his points in the second half, putting in a basket at 2:26 to tie the game 60-all. After an LCU field goal he went to the foul line to sink a pair of free throws, tie it at 62-62 and send the game into overtime. While holding Lubbock Christian to a single field goal and four free throws in the overtime, Merrill's score off a Page assist at 2:28 tied it up 66-66. He double clutched a put back at 2:10 and put the Eagles on top to stay 68-66. Page hit two free throws, then scored on an eight-footer in the lane with 1:05 remaining for a 72-66 lead. After a three-pointer by LCU's Jared Fears, free throws by Kory Allen and Page sealed the victory.
Merrill was 13 of 24 from the field and eight of 11 at the foul line. Page connected on some clutch baskets late and finished with 14 points. Keith Harris had eight points and Charles Baldwin and Kory Allen each had six. Allen proved to be a defensive force, hauling down 10 rebounds. Fears had 18 points and Brandon Jones had 17 for the Chaparrals.
