Taylor Cofer scored 4 goals in OC's 5-2 win over St. Gregory's.
SHAWNEE, Okla. (Oct. 22, 2011) – Taylor Cofer scored a career-high four goals as Oklahoma Christian rolled past St. Gregory's 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The win vaulted the Lady Eagles (5-9-1, 2-5-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) into eighth place in the conference standings with three games remaining, all at home. The top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament.
OC matched its season high for goals. The Lady Eagles also scored five goals in a season-opening win at Southwestern Christian.
"Other than a very shaky 10 minutes, we played well," OC head coach Randall Robison said. "Our players
showed composure by sticking to a game plan. Cofer had an outstanding game and did a terrific job creating chances from the midfield."
Before Saturday, Cofer, a senior from Edmond, had scored only two goals this season and five in her career. But she's shined against St. Gregory's – as a freshman in 2008, she had three assists and a goal in a 4-0 win.
This year, goals by Cofer in the 13th and 18th minutes staked the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 lead. St. Gregory's (1-14, 0-8) pulled even with goals by Megan Plank in the 35th minute and Kaitlin Hannaford in the 40th minute.
Cofer put OC back ahead – and completed her first career hat trick – by taking a feed from Somer Helms and scoring in the 60th minute.
Hannaford received a red card for a foul in the penalty box in the 76th minute and Cofer converted the ensuing penalty kick. With St. Gregory's playing a person down, Jamie White finished the scoring for the Lady Eagles with a goal in the 89th minute.
Chelsie Flagg and Kaitlyn Whitten split time in goal for OC. Flagg started and made two saves, while Whitten came on at halftime and also had two saves. The Cavaliers' goalkeeper, Jennifer Tabor, recorded nine saves.
Oklahoma Christian outshot the Cavaliers 16-8.
The Lady Eagles will host Lubbock Christian on Thursday and Wayland Baptist on Saturday before closing the regular season Nov. 1 against Northwestern Oklahoma State. All those teams currently trail OC in the SAC standings.
