Angela Pete recorded the 20th hat trick in OC women's soccer history in an 8-3 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 1, 2011) – Angela Pete scored three goals and Oklahoma Christian saved its best offensive season of the game for last, rolling past Northwestern Oklahoma State 8-3 on Tuesday night.
Pete recorded the 20th hat trick in OC soccer history and the second this season, as Taylor Cofer also had one against St. Gregory's. The Lady Eagles (6-10-2, 3-6-2 Sooner Athletic Conference) posted the program's highest-scoring game since an 8-0 win over Wayland Baptist in October 2001.
OC learned before the game it had been eliminated from any chance of qualifying for the SAC tournament, thanks to a 1-1 tie between Lubbock Christian and Wayland Baptist. OC and Lubbock Christian tied for eighth in the SAC standings, but the Chaparrals will advance to the tournament based on their head-to-head win over OC last Thursday.
The offensive stars Tuesday were plenty for the Lady Eagles, who outshot Northwestern 20-11. Senior Taylor Cofer had a goal and two assists, while another senior, Taylor Jorgensen, assisted on two goals. All told, nine OC players got into the scoring column, including two other seniors, Hope Heinen and Samantha Hinton.
"They just relaxed and played," OC head coach Randall Robison said.
The Lady Eagles quickly jumped on Northwestern (6-11-1, 2-8-1), with Pete scoring in the ninth minute. Cofer made it 2-0 in the 21st minute, taking an assist from Jorgensen. Heinen's goal in the 41st minute gave OC a 3-0 halftime lead and it looked like the Lady Eagles would run away from the Rangers.
But Northwestern's Taylor Marsh scored two goals six minutes apart, the latter on a free kick from about 20 yards that scooted past goalkeeper Chelsie Flagg, and suddenly the Rangers were within 3-2 in the 54th minute.
Freshman Carley Cave gave the Lady Eagles the momentum right back, scoring on a one-timer in the 60th minute. It was Cave's second goal in as many games since being moved into an attacking position.
Nine minutes later, Pete scored her second goal, on an assist from Cofer. In the 71st minute, freshman Rachel Bates scored her fourth goal of the season on a tap-in past Northwestern goalkeeper Caitlin Thorpe, putting OC ahead 6-2.
Brianne Brown's long blast went over the outstretched arms of Flagg to pull Northwestern within 6-3 in the 73rd minute, but Laura Welch answered in the 81st minute for OC and Pete, a junior from Edmond, finished the scoring with a 25-yard blast in the 86th minute.
Flagg recorded two saves after coming in at halftime. Kaitlyn Whitten started in goal for the Lady Eagles and shut out the Rangers in the first half, making three saves.
Northwestern's starting goalkeeper, Courtney Herian, made three saves before giving way at halftime to Thorpe, who had five saves.
Cofer ended the season as the Lady Eagles' top goal scorer, with seven, while Pete finished with six. Cofer also led OC in assists, with four.
