OC women struggle in Claremore

CLAREMORE, Okla. (Jan. 27, 2011) – The Oklahoma Christian women's basketball team struggled against a well-readied Rogers State University (Okla.) women's squad on Thursday night as the Lady Eagles fell 89-52 on the road.

The Lady Eagles never led during the match, despite a relatively close first half. The Lady Hillcats put up the first basket and followed it with another to take an early five-point lead over OC.

Andee Wayne nabbed the first basket for the Lady Eagles with a shot from behind the arc to close the gap back to just two points less than three minutes in. As the Rogers State women continued to net baskets, the Lady Eagles held close on their heels never allowing the Lady Hillcats a more than five-point lead until 9:28 was left in the half.

The OC women tied the game up on three occasions during the first period with the first at 10:58 left to play when the Lady Eagles' Carli Covalt netted a basket in the paint to put the score at 14-14.

Two subsequent ties came just a few minutes later from baskets by Katy Clift and Katy O'Steen to even things out at 21-21 and 23-23.

Following the final tie at 7:03 left to play, however, the Lady Hillcats marched on a 21-3 run to create an 18-point lead before the half's completion.

During the second half, the Lady Eagles struggled to find their groove, and never came within the 18-point gap.

Five minute into the half, the RSU women had increased their lead to 26 and steadily pushed their way to a 32-point ten minutes later.

With 2:27 left on the clock, the Lady Hillcats put up a final 8-0 run before the end of regulation to tally a 37-point margin of victory over the Lady Eagles at 89-52.

O'Steen led the Lady Eagles from the field with a 10-point game and recorded five rebounds as well in the process. Covalt helped out down low as well with another eight points and five rebounds.

Wayne added to the mix with seven points and seven rebounds while guards Krista Stevens and Tarynn Branscum each registered six-point games.

Following the loss, the Lady Eagles carry a 9-12 season record and are at 3-10 for conference play. The OC women will return home for their next matchup as they host John Brown University (Ark.) at home on Saturday. The women will tip off at 6 p.m. with a men's game scheduled to follow at 8 p.m.
