A former Oklahoma Christian player, Gary Jones joined the Eagles’ staff in August 2016 as a volunteer assistant coach, with a primary duty of coaching OC’s developmental team, and starting with the 2017-18 season, he assumed more prominent duties on the staff.
Jones, originally from Benton Harbor, Mich., played two seasons for legendary former OC coach Dan Hays and was on the squad that won the 2004-05 Sooner Athletic Conference title and advanced to the second round of the NAIA Division I tournament, finishing 26-7. He earned a bachelor’s degree in History/Pre-Law and a master’s degree in Leadership and Organizational Management, both from OC.
He previously served as an assistant coach at Douglass High School in Oklahoma City, helping guide the Trojans to consecutive Class 4A titles in 2010 and 2011. Douglass went 29-0 in the 2009-10 season and rose as high as No. 7 in one national ranking.
Jones also serves as OC’s multicultural and service learning coordinator and leads OC’s diversity efforts. He has been the driving force behind the annual Civil Rights Movement Tour for OC students and has played a key role in special on-campus events such as My Black America, History Speaks and Faith in Ferguson.
In July 2018, he began in a new role as OC's assistant dean of students.
A member of the board of directors for the National Youth Conference, Jones also serves as a deacon at the Eastside Church of Christ in Oklahoma City. He and his wife Jillian have three daughters, Bristal, Kaleigh and Savannah.
