One of Oklahoma’s most respected baseball coaches at any level, Lonny Cobble began serving as Oklahoma Christian’s 13th head coach in May 2012, tabbed to help the OC program transition into NCAA Division II status.
After completing his 13th season at the helm of the Oklahoma Christian baseball program, Cobble has posted a 299-327-1 career mark. He's also coached the OC program's first two players to advance the Triple-A level of professional baseball: Cale Coshow and Hunter Markwardt.
In 2025, Cobble produced the program's first All-Region honoree by any publication since 2021 in NCBWA Second Team honoree Hunter Jones. Jones also was named a First Team All-Conference selection while Trey Migl earned Second Team honors, marking the most All-Conference honorees for the maroon-and-gray since the 2021 campaign.
In his first season at the OC helm in 2013, the Eagles enjoyed arguably their most successful campaign since the university revived the program in 2008. OC went 26-26, winning the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region title – the program’s first postseason championship in 41 years – and qualifying for the NCCAA World Series. Cobble was named as the NCCAA Central Region coach of the year.
After that success, the program made even more history as two players signed by Cobble (Coshow and Chris Burgess) were selected in the Major League Baseball draft – the first time OC ever had two players chosen during the same season.
In year two under Cobble, in 2014, OC finished 38-17-1, smashing the program record for single-season wins, and repeated as NCCAA Central Region Champions while earning the No. 1 seed for the NCCAA World Series. The Eagles finished a strong third in the power-packed Heartland Conference while rising as high as No. 6 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings. Cobble was named as the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association's college coach of the year for 2014.
In 2015, the Eagles went 35-22, won their third straight NCCAA Central Region title and advanced to the NCCAA semifinals. Cobble again was named as the regional coach of the year.
He recorded his 100th collegiate win in the 2016 season opener at Texas A&M-Kingsville and guided OC to a 30-22 record that included a third-place Heartland finish, a run to the Heartland tournament championship round and 9-6 record against teams that qualified for the South Central Region tournament. In 2017, the Eagles went 28-21 and had Oklahoma's NCAA Division II pitcher of the year in senior Dalton Rentz.
Win No. 200 at OC came on April 5, 2019, when the Eagles took down No. 10-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) 7-6 at Dobson Field. Later in 2019, Markwardt became the third OC player coached by Cobble to be selected in the Major League Baseball draft, going in the 13th round to Philadelphia. In 2021 and 2022, Cobble guided OC to berths in the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament.
Cobble came to OC after 19 seasons at Edmond Santa Fe High School, during which he built a Class 6A powerhouse from scratch as the school’s first baseball coach, hired when the school opened before the 1993-94 academic year.
At Santa Fe, he posted a 536-234 record and twice guided the Wolves to the Class 6A state championship game, in 2002 and 2009. He had 28 players sign NCAA Division I scholarships and 19 players chosen in the Major League Baseball draft, including second-round selection Brandon Weeden in 2002.
Cobble graduated from Tuttle High School in 1985 and played baseball at Carl Albert State College in Poteau before finishing his college career at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. He graduated from UCO in 1991.
He spent one season as an elementary-school physical education teacher and assistant high school baseball coach in Waurika before being hired at Edmond Memorial High School, where he coached the sophomore team and assisted coach Byron Graham with the varsity squad. Memorial won consecutive state large-school titles in 1992 and 1993 with Cobble on the coaching staff.
Cobble was inducted in 2011 into the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame. He’s been honored as the OBCA’s All-Region 8 coach six times and served as the West coach for the annual All-State games in 2002. He was named as the Worth coach of the year in 2005, the Miller Net coach of the year in 2006 and the Micky Owens coach of the year in 2007.
Cobble is married to Terri Cobble and the couple has four grown children: Makenzie, Zac (a former standout for the Eagles), Hailey and Carly. The Cobbles live in Edmond and attend New Hope Church of Christ.
